ONLINE CLASSROOM FOR STUDENTS OF ISLAM — To help propel missions education into the 21st century, Caleb Project recently debuted an on- line classroom designed to augment the Encountering the World of Islam (EWI) course. The http://www.encounteringislam.org on-line classroom features additional relevant readings, extensive course resources, and an electronic forum where students can wrestle with the ideas of the course. As the Muslim world continues to headline global news through peace efforts, wars, and natural disasters, Caleb Project’s Encountering the World of Islam course has grown. The course is designed to help Christians understand Islam and prepare to interact in loving and authentic ways with Muslims. In addition to providing resources and readings, the on-line classroom facilitates these purposes by providing a secure forum for student interaction. EWI students can post thoughts and questions about the course, learn from each other, and pursue community after the course. The EWI on-line classroom is a prototype for additional on-line education efforts. Plans are underway for on-line supplements for Perspectives on the World Christian Movement and Perspectives Exposure courses as well as Crossing Cultures, an eye-opening weekend workshop that will expose churches to the needs of ethnic communities in their neighborhoods.

14. THE BACK PAGE: THE ART OF FINISHING — What’s the difference between “finishing” and the alternative? In soccer, sometimes it’s inches. The striker unleashes a rocket of a shot that misses by just inches and the whole stadium erupts in a sorrowful sign of regret.

In life, it’s the same.

The farmer who never quite finishes cleaning out the barn. The engineer who, in the end, never quite delivers the architectural drawings he promised to do for his local church. They finally give up and hire a “real” architect.

Are you in one of those situations? Always intending to finish writing that correspondence course… never quite time. You know you have to turn in information for your W-2, but you’re 3 months late and now you’re in trouble with Financial Director at the “home office.”

Well if you’re one of those statistics, take heart, for hope lies just around the corner. No matter how far behind you are, you can always wake up and make up your mind that today is a fresh start.

Last week, ladies and gentlemen, [drum roll] I finally finished the next stage of my doctoral dissertation. I can’t even remember how many years I’ve been meaning to complete these chapters. I’d start and restart, but something always took precedence. Then came March 2005. “Click.” Something turned on inside of me. And now, the past is the past… and the future is the future!

Is it a good feeling? Well — Duh! :-) As I sealed carefully written 100 pages or so and slipped them into the FedEx drop box, I was thinking, “Sure they’ll tell me everything I did wrong… but who cares! :-) I’m making progress now.”

How do we manage to get “off the mark” and churn through a project like this? Stay tuned for 5 tips next week. In the meantime, be careful out there. It’s a jungle that wants to suck in all your projects so you never complete them. :-)

TRY THIS ONE — Just click on over to http://www.findnot.com Yes, it’ll cost a little bit (less than your Internet Service Provider charges), but then the I.T. guy at your office won’t have to set up and maintain a flawless VPN for your ministry and you’ll enjoy completely anonymous messages and web-searching regardless of where you live on the planet. So… live in a land that suppresses information about Christianity, yet log onto “findnot” then use your newly-encrypted channel to order Bibles and have them shipped to a friend in the land next-door, then go pick them up the following week. Send and receive email without encryption and without worry that someone is “sniffing” your connection. (But, as always, remember to encrypt your local hard drive in case your laptop is seized. We highly recommended IBM Thinkpads because of built-in IBM Client Services encryption.) Check ‘em out — and no, we don’t get any kind of “kickback”. Just one beggar telling another where to find bread. (Thanks to our friend in N. Africa for referring us to this service. Believe me, he’ll prefer we leave him unnamed, but he’ll read this via his “findnot” VPN connection :-) .)

The filtering is done *before* it gets to you so that you do not need spam and porno blockers on your computer (an antivirus system on your computer is still necessary). 3. MASTERS DEGREE IN MANILA — Azusa Pacific University offers a master’s degree in Manila with courses held every summer. This year’s dates are May 31-June 11. 11. THE BACK PAGE: BACKUPS! WHEN WILL WE LEARN!? — I’m convinced that the only people who do daily backups are those who are slightly paranoid. However, just because they’re paranoid doesn’t mean somebody’s not out to get them! :-) The truth is… those paranoid people are probably a lot happier when something fails. Occasionally, we’ve written here in Brigada about the importance of disciplined daily backups. However, when my backup solution broke down a few months back, life was rushing on at such a fast pace, I failed to make time to fix it. Months passed. And this past Friday night, on a plane headed home from North Africa, the 60 gig hard drive in my new IBM laptop failed. And it *totally* failed. Won’t even spin up. Unfortunately, my last *full* backup is October 2003. :-( I have *partial* backups from February. Yup. I’m a slackard. Months, even *years* go by without needing backups… then the inevitable happens. Sure.. IBM is providing a new *blank* drive for free. OnTrack Technology has said they’d attempt to provide a full restoration for the low, low price of $700 – $3000, depending on what they find when they open it up. I’ve lost 30% of my doctoral dissertation, all my Brigada notes since October (including any new items sent during the past week — sorry!!), and tons more… not to mention all my notes from the North Africa trip, including a completely-finished grant application to rebuild homes for an earthquake stricken village there. All gone. Yes, OnTrack says they can probably do it for $700, since we’re a nonprofit. But still — wouldn’t it have been so much easier to simply back up those 60 gigs on a daily basis? Even *weekly* backups would have helped. So… please let me go on record: I need to back up *regularly*… and you do too. My IBM laptop was brand new. Your PC could fail too. In my case, it was the logic board. Yours might fail because of a virus or a mechanical fault. Either way, the outcome is the same: Let’s back up!!! Lesson- learned? I hope so. 11. THE BACKPAGE: LIKE THE MOON, GOD IS THERE THROUGH THE NIGHT — Is God there, even while you’re sleeping? You bet He is. We know that in our *heads*, but my wife, Penny, recently learned it in her *heart*.
    
    A few weeks back, she went into the doctor with severe chest pains. The results of some follow-up tests led both the radiologist *and* Penny’s doctor to the same conclusion: Penny had contracted Emphysema! (By the way, she’s never smoked; nor have I. But though we thought this diagnosis was strange, the doctors seemed so sure, offering stats about non-smokers developing this fatal illness too, in as many as 5-10% of all cases.) During the next couple of weeks of further testing, Penny never wavered in her faith in the sovereignty of God… that He was in control. At the same time, there is no cure for Emphysema, and it normally ends in taking the life of its victim. Those were realities that she had to face, during those days.

    But she remembers waking one morning in particular, very early, while it was still dark. Immediately, she noticed up in the skylight window the giant full moon, shining brightly. To her, it was a kind of affirmation that God had been there all through the night. She took it as a symbol of his ever-present Lordship, beaming into her life. She paused to thank Him for the fact that even while we’re asleep, He’s already at work preparing our tomorrow.

    Paul wrote, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Eph. 2:10)

    Perhaps you’ve already heard “the rest of the story.” A lung specialist concluded after additional tests that she does not have Emphysema. Instead, the chest x-rays were “overexposed!” We were overjoyed, and we counted it as answered prayer. However, this Friday (March 13), Penny sees a heart specialist about the original symptom: chest pains. We’d greatly appreciate your prayers, that God would grant the doctor wisdom and insight on her condition. Thank you for your concern and prayer during the past month! It means a lot… because it really is a jungle out there!

For example, in about a week or so, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary In Fort Worth, TX, will host the “2004 Consultation on Orality, Literacy & the Oral Bible.” It’s very significant here that this conference is being co-sponsored, so to speak, by Wycliffe, Campus Crusade, YWAM, and the Int’l Mission Board. (In sheer numbers, those 4 organizations probably represent the geocenter of evangelical mission outreach.) There, Ralph Winter announced his outlandish suspicion that there were *thousands* of groups of people “hidden” from the gospel. Out of that consultation came a movement of people that later came to bear the name of the consultation’s venue: The Lausanne Movement for World Evangelization. I was just a junior in high school, so I didn’t make that one. But I definitely enjoyed Lausanne II in Manila, in 1989. At that conference, Ed Dayton made sure every participant understood our changing world, the complexities of reaching out to urban masses, and the hazards of modernity. Now I’m wondering how this fall’s conference in Thailand will shape up. Billed not as “Lausanne III”, but rather as 30 smaller conferences running simultaneously, I’m curious about how things will play out. To see what I mean, just go to your favorite search engine, put in “Fuller prohibit proselytizing” and read any of the hundreds of pages you see, commenting on the subject. (It’s fairly heated, I guess.) The way I get it, Seminary leadership is basically asking for a two-year moratorium on proselytizing the one faith from the other. On the surface, this seems like quite an about-face from the central focal point of Donald McGavran’s “School of World Missions”, which typically teaches entire degrees in how to share Christ’s hope with Muslims. Can’t you hear it? “This Explorer virus automatically begins searching your hard drive for credit card numbers. Once it finds them, it emails them to an anonymous email address in Amsterdam. Dreadful. Erase it now.” Gang… when will we learn. Practically *all* the warnings we get — 99% of them — are hoaxes. Do yourself a favor and send an email to <opcbrigadaorg> to learn how to spot them. And… for those hit by the sulfnbk.exe virus, good luck reading long file names.
