1) HOW TO INCREASE PRAYER SUPPORT? — Most cross-cultural workers agree that their number one need is a high level of prayer support. However, transforming that need into a consistent reality is often an ongoing challenge. If you have a method or idea that has worked well for you or your organization, Kerry would love to hear about it. Possibly you know a website with some creative ideas. Send your best ideas to <khawkinsatteamexpansiondotorg>. In a couple of weeks, he’ll share his findings with us and we’ll publish the results here as an auto-responder. Thanks Kerry! </khawkinsatteamexpansiondotorg>

2) OPTIONS FOR TRAINING YOUR SHEPHERDS? — The International School of Ministry offers a 159 hour International Curriculum for the training of shepherds. In cooperation with Vision University of California, they offer not only their own diploma, but an Associates of Biblical Studies to all registered students. The International Curriculum is available in over 50 languages on VHS, VCD, Audio Cassette and via internet. Some of the contributors are Jack Hayford, Reinhard Bonnke, Dick Eastman, A. L. Gill, LaMar Boschman, etc.

It is the work of Pastor Berin Gilfillan who traveled with Reinhard Bonnke for more than three years. In those travels he saw the mass conversion of 100s of thousands and he also saw how small was the available body of Christ to absorb such huge numbers of new believers. There are presently over 3000 schools operating around the world. Only 300 of them are the United States. One of the newest is in Corpus Christi (Body of Christ), TX. ISOM is part of Good Shepherd Ministries Intl. P.O. Box 368, Los Alamitos, CA 90720-0368, USA, 800.901.8175 or 001-562.594.9123 or fax 001-562.594.6143. Their website is http://www.isom.org . Their email address is infoatisomdotorg.

______________________________________________________________________

3) HOW DOES ONE LOCATE EXISTING GOSPEL FILMS? — Suppose you knew someone who wanted to find… “The Mystics” (originally used by Campus Crusade), “The Lie”, and “He Restoreth My Soul” — three films from the past. Is there a web-search tool that can help? A Brigada participant wants to know . . . and the answer might be useful for many. Drop us a line if you’ve got a solution and we’ll publish the answer for all. Thanks!

______________________________________________________________________

4) GLOBAL YOUTH MINISTRY REPORT — Doing youth ministry outside the USA or training youth workers globally? A new free service, “The Global Youth Ministry Report” sends out an e-mail to find out what’s working globally in such areas as “Training Student Leadership,” “Reaching Lost Youth,” or “Developing Indigenous Worship for Youth.” Then, a writer compiles this global wisdom and e-mails back a free report. In this way, youth workers glean ideas from practitioners in various cultures that may well work in their own setting. Finally, each report will be archived at http://www.reach-out.org in the “ARTICLES” section (Whew! What a great site!) so that further input from readers can add to this global I.Q. of youth ministry. Interested in this free wisdom exchange? E-mail Steve, in cooperation with Reach Out Youth Solutions, at <smilleroatmindspringdotcom> . </smilleroatmindspringdotcom>

5) A CASE STUDY IN PARTNERSHIPS — Nepal, the only official Hindu kingdom in the world, was closed to the outside world until the 1950’s when the king opened the country for development and education. The 1990 democratic revolution further opened the doors to the gospel. Reportedly, for the first time in Nepal history, the Nepal government has turned over a district government hospital to a community based non governmental organization (NGO). The organization, ‘Human Development and Community Services’ (HDCS), is a Nepali Christian NGO. HDCS is partnering with MMD, a European medical mission that will send equipment and medical personnel. Future Nepal government – Nepali Christians relationships will depend upon positive results. There will be much attention on HDCS. More information can be obtained about HDCS, the Lamjung District Community Hospital Project and opportunities for service by logging on to the HDCS website: http://www.hdcsnepal.org .

7) EUROTRAIN: AN INNOVATIVE EXPERIENCE FOR YOUNG LEADERS — Top Flight Leadership is taking nominations for EuroTrain 2002 – an innovative training experience for North American young leaders! EuroTrain (for leaders age 16-22) is a completely unique experience…and an answer to the new paradigms needed to develop new generations of leaders. During July 2002, EuroTrain groups will travel through five nations in Europe learning leadership, developing ministry skills, getting a grasp of their destiny, gaining a heart for unreached peoples around the world, and creating a plan for long-term personal and leadership growth. HOW DO WE REPLACE INFOBEAT? (EMAIL NEWS SOURCES)

Brigada autoresponder Looking for some news source that will replace InfoBeat? Want to get news into your inbox on a daily basis? David sought answers (in a previous Brigada Today) and has stood well on his promise, and thanks to his faithful follow-through, we can now publish his findings. Just send a note to: email-newsatbrigadadotorg  (email-newsatbrigadadotorg)   to get his full report. Unfortunately, according to David, the replacements weren’t tremendous… but he does give some options. Check it out. Thanks David!

OPPORTUNITIES TO MINISTER TO MUSLIMS

Have the events of Sept. 11th put to an end any hopes of service in the Muslim world? Not on your life. For example, listen to Jeff, from Mission to Unreached Peoples: “Yes – we have numerous teaching opportunities (even invitations!) to serve the Lord in Muslim countries. Some positions have stipends, as well as additional financial help for housing and transportation.” Certainly the world situation compels us to be all the more vigilant in caring for the personal safety of our family and friends. But does that mean doors are closing. Quite the contrary. Listen again to Jeff, describing at the very least, mission opportunities that he’s trying to fill: “All you need to be an effective tool for the Lord is to have a heart for missions, a degree of any kind, and be a native English speaker. You will be blessed and you will be a blessing. The Lord can use you!” For more information, contact Jeff mupinfoatmupdotorg  (mupinfoatmupdotorg)   in the USA or via Net2Phone at 888-847-6950 or 206-781-3151 or check out http://www.mup.org.

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us! See the note above if you’d like to submit items for Brigada Today. Thanks for understanding. Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.

NOT MUCH HYPE ABOUT “GODSMISSION.COMMUNITY”

calendar I would have thought we’d be hearing lots about the big-time gathering that the Billy Graham Center is hosting in Orlando, Sept. 20-23. Supposedly, some 1500 leaders (80% of the leadership of the missionary force in North America) are headed there… including those gathering for the EFMA and the IFMA conventions. But instead, at least from where we’ve been sitting, there has been a pretty strange silence. Speakers include Tom Houston and others. Other groups like ACMC, Willow Creek Int’l, WEF, and Intent are rallying there too. To learn more, click to: http://www.godsmission.com or email gmcatwheatondotedu  (gmcatwheatondotedu)  .

MISSIONPREP TRAINING IN TORONTO

graduation cap Two important training events coming are to town. SYIS (Sharpening Your Interpersonal Skills) will be held in Toronto, Canada from October 1-5. This interactive Workshop for Missionaries by Ken Williams’ International Training Partners is intended for mission personnel wanting to increase their knowledge, attitudes and skills in relating to others. A 216 page workbook is provided, in which each topic includes key articles, a Bible study, a self-assessment, and opportunities for growth. Limited space is available so register now. In addition, Language Acquisition Training is slated for October 14-26. This is a proactive approach to learning a new language. You can evaluate your learning strengths & weaknesses, learn the principles and skills of language acquisition practice with native speakers of your target language, and actually begin to grow in your target language, all in the space of two weeks in what some say is the world’s “most multicultural city” – Toronto. For more information contact Robert at 416-284-5645 or email him micanadaatinterlogdotcom  (micanadaatinterlogdotcom)  . For more information see http://www.timcentre.com/missionprep

WE GET MAIL: HOW DO YOU SAY “FORMER SOVIET UNION”

Whoa… We got a lot of email expressing opinions on the “former Soviet Union” issue. TAKEN TO TASK OVER THE TERM, “FORMER SOVIET UNION”.) The opinions came in all over the board but the general consensus was . . . it’s not an easy task to describe such a complex world! In the end, it seems the consensus is… we have to use several terms. No one term adequately describes the vast mosaic that used to be the USSR. Several Brigada Today participants wrote from within ___ (whatever you want to call it :-) ) to say that they totally understand and that “former Soviet Union” is an understandable compromise (though probably still a compromise). Others urged switching to several terms — like Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, etc. “Russian Speaking Republics” wasn’t at all very popular, for obvious reasons. (Some are trying to lose that language.) So… it’s a naming jungle out there! For those who need to go in print with descriptive terms, we encourage you to be sensitive… and for those reading the terms, we urge you to extend grace! It’s not an easy task.

MAIL FOR YOUR CONTACTS

letter and ligntening bolt The folks at SOON Gospel Literature produce an evangelistic easy-English paper and an associated evangelistic Bible correspondence course. They are mailing the free paper worldwide to about 100,000 contacts at any one time, using the help of 1000 volunteer mailing groups throughout UK. There is currently spare capacity to send the paper to additional addresses, and SOON’s team is happy to take referral addresses from any organization such as a radio ministry as an add-on to their own follow-up. SOON is particularly appropriate for Africa and Asia, as well as any TEFL situation. To see online samples of the paper, go to:
http://www.brigada.org/today/articles/olympic.html

To discuss the handling of addresses, email: tonyatsoondotorgdotuk  (tonyatsoondotorgdotuk)  . Free copies of the paper in easy-English, French, Swahili and African Portuguese are also available to any Christian group to use for local distribution.

SIRCAM TROJAN “WORM” (VIRUS) SEEMS RAMPANT IN CHRISTIAN CIRCLES

virus The “Sircam worm (kind of like a virus)” seems rampant in Christian circles. I’m not sure why, particularly, except for the fact that maybe we’re more trusting of people we know… and since the trojan contains its own SMTP engine and automatically composes emails to the user’s address book entries, it seems that friends are the biggest victims of the Sircam “worm”. For some reason, McAffee antivirus software seems a bit less effective at handling it. Not sure why. Either way, there’s more information at: href="http://wwwdotsarcdotcom/avcenter/venc/data/w32dotsircamdotwormatmmdothtml">http://wwwdotsarcdotcom/avcenter/venc/data/w32dotsircamdotwormatmmdothtml

Notice that if you can’t afford Norton Antivirus 2001 (which is very effective against this and most other viruses), there are instructions at the site above on how to remove the virus manually. There are also instructions on how to recognize it.

Want to make your PC less vulnerable to attacks from these kinds of viruses or worms? Unhook the Visual Basic script tool. Most individuals probably don’t need it anyway. Just open My Computer, then open Control Panel, then open Add/Remove Programs. Then click on the “Windows Setup” tab. This gets you to Windows features that you can either add or remove. Highlight “Accessories”, then click on the Details button. Scroll down the list of features, uncheck “Windows Scripting Host” Click OK to save changes, and close out each dialogue window. With Windows Scripting Host uninstalled, those silly “Trojan horse virus programs” won’t be able to run Visual Basic Scripts.

They’re rampant… so be careful… It truly is a jungle out there!

SEE THOSE FONTS ON YOUR PC

Have you noticed how your PC slows down as you add zillions of fonts (some of which you never use anyway?). Get this free viewing utility, then weed out the ones you don’t use. “FontViewer 2” scans the files on your hard drive then tells you which fonts you actually use. Pretty handy! It then highlights the files you don’t use, allowing you to remove them . . . at least for the time being. It runs under Win 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0 or 2000. Just head on over to: http://www.pcmag.com/utilities to get your copy… for free! Tell ’em Brigada sent you! :-)

Is it your goal to start a church that can stand on its own? How do you get there? Beginning next week, we hope to do a series of “BackPage” editorials on the best path to developing a church that can stand on its own, i.e., become indigenous. Send your best ideas to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg  (DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg)   and please make the subject read, simply, “STAND”. We’ll publish a series of quick reports here… then make a compilation report available as an auto-responder. Thanks in advance!!! (Please be sure to make the subject line, “STAND”. It’s the only way we can be sure that all the great contributions will be included! Thanks!)

MINISTRY IN THE RUSSIAN-SPEAKING WORLD…

Robert and his daughter, Heidi, recently graduated from Russian Language Ministries housed at Columbia International University in the sunny palmetto state. They attended partially on the recommendation from an earlier edition of Brigada Today! He writes that “they have 50/50 balance of native speakers and American teachers: the first group so you speak correctly, and the second so you can understand how to speak correctly! There is an excellent cultural component to the training.” He served for two years in the former Soviet Union actively studying language, and because the folks at R.L.M. understand how English-speakers think, they were able to surpass all he learned in the first six weeks. He writes, “Russian grammar is incredibly complex, and the folks at R.L.M. make it accessible. I can return to the Russian-speaking world with both linguistic and cultural confidence that I didn’t have before.” Hail the good folks at R.L.M. at 800-799-7976 or 803-333-9119 or rlmofficeatjunodotcom  (rlmofficeatjunodotcom)   or on the web at: http://www.russianlanguage.org. OPEN LETTER FROM OPERATION WORLD AUTHOR

Here’s your chance to help bring out a new edition of Operation World, one of the most effective and time-tested ways to mobilize and pray for global missions. This past week, we received this note from Patrick Johnstone, the author of OW:

“Greetings, and thanks for Brigada!

“Thought I would drop you a line about progress towards completion of OW.

“For prayer: Operation World nears completion, but in the final months before our deadline of 30 June 2001 we must squeeze in about 6 months of work! We value prayer. The huge printing press in the USA is booked for July and we cannot miss our long-fixed slot. Publication is due in early September and the book will be launched on Logos 2 in London Sept 8 and at the EFMA/IFMA jamboree in Florida a few days later. Pray that this may happen! It involves five of us working flat out – me often 14 hours a day.

“Progress to date. We have now completed the draft of the text for every country, and these have been distributed to thousands of respondents for checking. This edition will be the most checked of any hitherto – because of the gift of e-mail, but mistakes, unnecessary errors needlessly painful comments are all possible for we are human! Please pray for objectivity and incisiveness as well as speed!

“We are now writing up the Special Ministries and the Regional summaries. I have just completed Africa and am now tackling the Americas then comes massive, complex Asia.

“In this edition we are beginning the text on most countries with Answers to Prayer – God has done so much in our world over the past decade and we want to ensure He gets the glory for His power revealed in answer to our prayers! Regional totals emerging show that for Evangelicals the 1990s was probably the greatest harvest ever.
Yours in Jesus,
Patrick Johnstone

Here at Brigada, we hold Patrick in the highest respect, so when he takes time to personally write and ask for prayer, we listen! So we urgently covet your prayers on his behalf and on that of the entire OW staff! Please take a moment right now to remember his requests!

GREAT RESOURCE FOR MISSIONS MOBILIZATION MATERIALS

Here’s a great resource for missions mobilization materials if you happen to live in the USA or know someone who does: 8MORE-BOOKS (866-732-6657) or Fax 706-554-7444 or email orderatomlitdotomdotorg  (orderatomlitdotomdotorg)  . Ask for a catalogue. (Remember that we highly discourage using email for credit card orders.) Noting the obvious lack of a website, we wrote them and they were nice enough to respond, saying that one was in the works. In the meantime, http://www.omlit.om.org says two words “OM Literature” :-).
--------------------------------------

ENCOURAGEMENT / DISCERNMENT DEVOTIONALS

If you have any suggestions on devotionals or studies that would help missionaries recharge and refocus, Paul needs your help. In approximately three weeks, he is leaving on a ten-day journey to visit missionary friends who are in a time of transition and who seek the Lord’s clarity in their current location. Send suggestions to michalikattexasdotnet  (michalikattexasdotnet)  .

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO HTML

Here’s a great website for enlightenment on the good news: http://www.thegoodnews.org/HeresHope/default.htm This is produced by the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. (Thanks for the tip, Mark!)
--------------------------------------

‘PARADOX’ IN MONTREAL

“Connected to culture, conformed to Christ” will be the theme of a two-month experimental missions internship in the Canadian city of Montreal this summer. Sponsored by the Southern Baptist Convention’s International Mission Board and North American Mission Board, “Paradox” is designed to deepen students’ devotion to Christ and develop a team for innovative evangelism in a postmodern, cross-cultural setting through arts, personal relationships and other formats.

Participants will be ministering in the largest city in Canada’s predominantly French-speaking province of Quebec, which several evangelical ministries have labeled as the least evangelized area of North America. For more information, contact David at brazzealsatcanadadotcom  (brazzealsatcanadadotcom)   or check out http://www.prayforquebec.com.

PRAYER FOR CHILDREN AT RISK

praying hands “The WorldWide Day of Prayer for Children at Risk”, held on the first Saturday on June each year, is sponsored by Viva Network, PO Box 633, Oxford OX2 0XZ. A prayer information pack is available by mail or on the web at http://www.viva.org. The pack is free and has lots of imaginative suggestions for organizing a prayer event including stuff for the kids. Don’t miss the 2nd June 2001. Contact Alan areedatvivadotorg  (areedatvivadotorg)  .

SEMINAR ON THE WORLD CHRISTIAN ENCYCLOPEDIA

calendar The second edition of this 2-volume reference work is now hot off the press. The WCE2 gives detailed information on the status of Christianity and the status of evangelization in every country, religion, people group, language, city, and province in the world – as well as many other valuable resources. It is a goldmine of strategic information for world evangelization. It is also big, complicated, detailed, and sometimes technical. ACMC, Caleb Project, and CBInternational are co-sponsoring an interactive, half-day seminar on the WCE2, on 27 April in Littleton, Colorado. It will be led by Michael Jaffarian, an Associate Editor of the Encyclopedia. For more information, contact Lauri Dennis at LDennisatcprojectdotcom  (LDennisatcprojectdotcom)  . If you would like to see the seminar offered in your city (even outside the USA), contact Michael at michaeldawnaatearthlinkdotnet  (michaeldawnaatearthlinkdotnet)  .

GLOBAL ECONOMIC OUTREACH ADDS “E-MAIL ONLY” INTERFACE

letter and ligntening bolt Those with unreliable or expensive Internet service can now interface with GEO by e-mail. GEO recruits Christian craftsmen, hobbyists, artisans, and professionals to give practical information and assistance to missionaries. “Email only” clients can begin by sending an email to Indexatteamgeodotorg  (Indexatteamgeodotorg)  ; an automated response will give further information. Those preferring secure communications can send an email to Smalltalkatteamgeodotorg  (Smalltalkatteamgeodotorg)  ; this automated response contains no sensitive language or information. All others should interface with GEO through their website http://www.teamgeo.org or regular e-mail address mailatteamgeodotorg  (mailatteamgeodotorg)  .

INFORMATION REQUESTED ON MINISTRY TO THE DEAF

The Wollongong (Australia) Deaf Church is interested in knowing where in the world there is established ministry to the Deaf, particularly in relation to their planned visit to a Russian Children’s Camp in July 2001. Thousands of Russian children go to the summer camps. This particular camp has about 200 deaf children, who have never ‘heard’ the Gospel. They want to be sure that the Deaf children reached at the camp can properly be followed up. Send replies about this region and others to Michael churchesmaatcyberelectricdotnetdotau  (churchesmaatcyberelectricdotnetdotau)   and they will be compiled into a single report for use by Brigada members. People who are able to share in prayer support for this venture should also contact Michael as above. Thanks Michael!

NO MORE WARNINGS ABOUT MADALYN MURRAY O’HAIR

Brigada readers are reporting having received several warnings recently about a supposed effort by atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair to have the word “God” banned from the airwaves by the FCC. This would supposedly result in the termination of the television program, Touched by an Angel. These and all future warnings are bogus. Ms. O’Hair has passed on to the hereafter. See the article in the Wall Street Journal’s obituary page: http://www.opinionjournal.com/wsj/?id=85000748. Apparently she was kidnapped, forced to withdraw money from the account of her organization, and then sadly murdered… Not a great ending. But the Wall Street Journal piece is well worth the read. Check it out! (Thanks Justin!)

FROM THE “I CAN’T BELIEVE IT’S FREE” DEPT.

These IMB people continue to surprise me. I think it all started in Seoul, Korea, when Avery Willis stood up during a session at the AD2000 conference (GCOWE 95). His promise went something like this: “We’re opening up the store!” :-) Maybe you thought he was joking. :-) Now that he’s the top man at the Southern Baptist’s International Mission Board, he’s standing true to his word. Check out the resource below — well worth the download time! Hat’s off to author David Garrison, too. Though he’s copyrighted it (so you can’t ethically print copies and sell them), he’s also made it free for the globe to use. You’ve gotta’ love a guy like that since it stands to reason that several downloads might have possibly been paying customers at the bookstands. Bravo to Mr. Garrison for his unselfish spirit… and here’s hoping that it comes back to him many-fold over in the Kingdom to come!
--------------------------------------

GET THIS FREE RESOURCE IF YOU WANT TO PLANT CHURCHES

Funny how I had just told our Personnel guy at the Team Expansion office, “We’ve got to find some more training materials for teaching our new missionaries to plant churches.” The next thing you know, I learn about this 892K Word file, accompanied by a 2.38 Meg PowerPoint teaching presentation that goes with the booklet, and a 318K bonus Powerpoint on “POUCH churches”. So now, tomorrow morning, I’ll say to our Personnel guy, “Chris, thanks to the unselfishness of Avery Willis and David Garrison, we’re ready to rumble! Find them all at: http://www.newwway.org/cpm.htm
--------------------------------------

HOW TO PLAN FOR POSTMODERN SENSITIVE MINISTRY

As if the Garrison resource wasn’t already enough, two great articles on the subject of ministry that is sensitive to postmodernism by Ross Rhode are available on newWway this month: “Practical Considerations for Postmodern Sensitive Churches” and “The Gospel and Postmodernism”. Also, part of knowing how to communicate to a target population is knowing in what position the message should be presented. What is Positioning? find out the answer at http://www.newWway.org

SAFEGUARD THE RTF FILE ATTACHMENTS YOU RECEIVE

virus Do you sometimes receive text files in “RTF” format? (Hint: If you don’t know what RTF format is, then you probably don’t have anything to worry about.) If so, trot on over to this link and install the virus fix: www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms00-005.asp Can you believe it? Not even RTF files are safe anymore (’til you install that link.) What will these vicious virus-laden vandals think of next?

NEW PACE VIDEO FOR $15

PACE logo Are you on the edge of your seat wondering how the “PACE” concept is working out, nearly five years after it was first introduced at Envision ’96 (a missions mobilization conference held in Lexington, Kentucky, Nov. 1st – 3rd, 1996)? Do you lie awake at night, tossing and turning, constantly asking yourself questions like, “I wonder if there are any churches actually using the PACE paradigm…” Are you curious as to what the acronym “PACE” even stands for (Hint: Pray, Activate, Commit, Enlist). Fret no more! Now you can order an 11-minute promotional video aimed at helping you remember those three nights in 1996 and how they are impacting the future of missions today. And now, for no extra charge, dubbed onto the same video, see an extra 11-minute video containing footage from last week’s “PACE-Lab” in Louisville, Kentucky. So together, these 22 minutes of fast-paced, music-filled images will encourage your soul and broaden your hopes. (Okay… so maybe they won’t do all that, but at least they’ll fill you in on some positive points of using the PACE approach.) To order, send a check for $15 to Team Expansion (attn: PACE video), 3700 Hopewell Rd., Louisville, KY 40299 or use PayPal to send payment to infoatTeamExpansiondotorg  (infoatTeamExpansiondotorg)  . You can also to the Team Expansion website at http://www.teamexpansion.org, click on “Resources”, then click on the PayPal icon to transfer the $15 instantly and safely using your credit card or bank account. Just add a note to infoatTeamExpansiondotorg  (infoatTeamExpansiondotorg)   that gives your shipping address.

THE BACK PAGE: MORE ON HOW GOOD TEAMS BECOME GREAT TEAMS

books and pen So far, in our series on how to good teams become great teams, we’ve covered these four key components:

  1. A clear sense of purpose
  2. Motivated team members
  3. Determination
  4. Gifted team members

This past week, Pete Holzmann wrote to say that God had been teaching him a ton lately — and most recently, he had appreciated the principles in a book, “Topgrading.” It’s apparently all about choosing, and coaching, the best players for your work team. Though it’s not written from a Christian perspective, necessarily, Pete felt that, if extended into our paradigm, it would offer great help on some 50 different areas of competency. According to Pete, “One of the most valuable little tools it provides is a division of those 50 areas into three categories:

  • Weaknesses easily fixed (through education, etc)
  • Weaknesses NOT easily fixed, but doable with significant effort
  • Weaknesses very difficult if not impossible to fix (without the Lord’s intervention)

Examples:

  • How to choose the right people (easily fixed)
  • How to be more personable (hard to fix but doable)
  • How to be more intelligent (uhhh… that’s a toughie!)

Sounds intriguing. (It’s Topgrading, by Bradford Smart, Copyright 2000 Prentice Hall Press. 403 pages.)

Okay… so we’re ready to expand the list. [drum roll snare drum] From my perspective, another key principle to turn good teams into great teams involves appropriate leadership.

e. Great teams have great leaders — If you don’t believe this, just study some of the great coaches of the world. I think of Anson Dorrance of the University of North Carolina’s women’s soccer program. Here’s a coach that has dominated a sport. Probably no other coach in the history of the universe has so effectively captured repeating titles in any other sport in existence. How is it that other great soccer players can assemble great talent, yet come away with mediocre winnings? There’s some kind of chemistry present when a great leader steps onto the field with a good team.

So what does Anson do? For one thing, he measures everything. His logic is… unless he follows it, no one will focus on improving it. So he has his team members compete in speed races, shoot-outs, and just about every possible soccer skill imaginable. For those of us who work in missions, maybe one parallel would be that we simply meet regularly with our team members to assess how they’re doing.

In our own mission, we recently began a top-to-bottom process of asking team leaders to meet with team members on a monthly basis, to focus not only on “job performance” (as cold as that sounds), but also on spiritual walk, relationships, and a dozen other factors. It’s taken us a while to implement it, but almost without exception, all the teams which have begun the process are reporting amazing feedback. One team leader in Asia wrote that although it’s “frightful territory” to enter into these “checkpoint” sessions, they indeed are promoting better communication, healthier relationships, and better conflict management.

And for good teams to become great teams, all those factors have to be in place.

Brigada autoresponder Want to get a list of the entire discussion so far regarding turning good teams into great teams? Just send an email to great_teamsatbrigadadotorg  (great_teamsatbrigadadotorg)   and you’ll receive the assembled text back in your inbox in minutes. And… be careful out there. It’s a jungle. :-)

SUBMITTING CONTENT — To submit content or ideas to Brigada Today, first please get a copy of “Guidelines for submitting items to Brigada” Then, once you’ve composed your item in keeping with those guidelines, send your item for Brigada Today to DLucasatteamexpansiondotorg  (DLucasatteamexpansiondotorg)  .
Thanks to for hosting the Brigada mailing list.
Emphasis is placed on items relating to unreached peoples and challenges faced by those reaching them cross-culturally.

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list.

Thank you.
