  1. SPONSORS MAKE A DIFFERENCE — Thanks again to those who have partnered with us to help Brigada become more current. All sponsorship money will go *directly* toward helping us pay for a new part-time secretary! She started Monday and — *already* she’s made a difference! She’s returning phone calls, emails, messages, and letters, some of which have gone unanswered for longer than I’m willing to publicly admit. :-) Thank you so much for your help! As a result, you’re seeing a catch-up on Brigada Todays… already! Today we’re thankful for an anonymous donation from a prof. at Wartburg Theological Seminary http://www.wartburgseminary.edu in Dubuque, IA. Please take special note of their Masters program in Theology, Development, and Evangelism. See other sponsors by clicking to: http://www.brigada.org then clicking on “Sponsors” in the link at the bottom of the page.

  2. ESL INSTRUCTION — Here’s an ESL (English as a Second Language) course, three months in length, taught via immersion at the YWAM base in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, USA. The next school is scheduled for September 29 through December 19, 2003. For more information, see website: http://www.ywampa.org, or email <ywampaatcomcastdotnet>. </ywampaatcomcastdotnet>

  3. MORE SPAM CONTROL — Thanks to Arne for yet another spam controller program: http://www.spampal.org/ Looks very versatile, and it’s free, like MailWasher. And then there’s the product produced by a Caleb Project staffer friend of mine who is a closet-programmer. John Hanna at Caleb Project has spent his spare time over the last year creating an amazing anti-spam tool. It’s custom designed from the ground up to be the perfect anti-spam tool for small to medium-sized organizations. It’s already being used on more than 100 servers (w2k, *nix, os/x, even os2) on three continents and is blocking more than 30,000 spams (and about 200 viruses) per day. If your organization hasn’t solved the spam problem yet, send your IT guy/gal to http://assp.sf.net — it’s not only a great solution, it’s free.

  4. NEW FEATURES ON WEB EVANGELISM GUIDE — Now you’ve got the ability to seamlessly insert any page from the Guide into another site, on a range of evangelism, communication and writing issues. A few lines of insert code are included at the end of every page: by copy/pasting these into another webpage, the main content of that Guide page will be instantly called up in the user’s page. (The text of all pages is also free to reproduce in any printed medium.) – a set of study questions about each page is available for individual study, group discussion, or as part of any academic study course. http://www.brigada.org/today/articles/web-evangelism.html Great job, Tony!

  5. SPANISH VIDEO ON MOROCCO — Arise Shine Morocco (ASM) announces a long-delayed Spanish-language version of its resource video is now available. Approximately 30 minutes in total length, it includes several short videos about Morocco and the Berber peoples. For those who will use them for mobilization purposes, complimentary copies may be obtained from ASM by emailing <asmatinterumdotorg>. Extensive information and various resources about Morocco continue to be available in Spanish and many other languages through the ASM website: http://www.interum.org/ASM </asmatinterumdotorg>

  6. CHEAP CALLS TO CHINA — For those needing to call China from the USA, It’s only 6.5 cents/minute using a rechargeable phone card. Get 10% off by entering promotion code “PROINC” when prompted. https://www.pincity.com/signup_step1.asp?accountType=proinc For calls within the USA, AT&T has a 3.9 cent calling card with no restrictions, no fees, no minimum charges-obtainable at any SAM’s Wholesale club. (Thanks Kurt <aefcenterathotmaildotcom>.) </aefcenterathotmaildotcom>

  7. CANADIAN TENTMAKER NETWORK WEBSITE GETS NEW LOOK — Did you know that 1.5 million Canadians work abroad? How many of them could be potential tentmakers? CTN’s website has been updated and will get regular attention from now on. They’re asking your help in getting the word out to all Canadians. When you visit, don’t forget to leave a virtual footprint in their CTN Public Forum, eh? :-) Note that there is an upcoming tentmaking seminar in Toronto Ontario on Saturday September 27, 2003. Visit them at http://www.tentmaking.org or email <infoattentmakingdotorg> </infoattentmakingdotorg>

  8. SHARPEN YOUR INTERPERSONAL SKILLS — International Training Partners offers Sharpening Your Interpersonal Skills Workshops in different parts of the world. These five-day, highly interactive workshops focus on biblical application of skills in relating to one another and to the host people.

An workshop hosted by International Training Partners will be held at Palmer Lake, Colorado near Colorado Springs September 7-11, 2003. Contact Paul <plereatearthlinkdotnet> for information.

Go to http://www.itpartners.org for details on all of the workshops and information on ITP. If your mission is interested in sponsoring a SYIS workshop, contact Paul. </plereatearthlinkdotnet>

  9. NETWORKING FOR MISSION — The Web can be used for networking in a remarkable way. Read how a web-savvy missionary used the Internet before his arrival, to make his ministry much more effective: “Before I arrived in [Asian country] as a missionary, I went online to the city I was sent to. It is a mixed Christian-Muslim regional center in a very remote part of the country.) I then read the daily paper online, emailed the mayor and local officials, joined a local discussion group, got informed and made friends. When I arrived, a number of people whom I had met online invited me out to dinner and my ministry started as soon as I arrived. I also managed to join the email group of the then Vice-President (now President) and made a few constructive comments – so when I had problems with my visa, I just sent an email and it was soon fixed! I reckon that I saved between six months to two years of ministry time by making a wide range of high-level friends before I arrived and “starting fast and well-informed”. Sure, only 1% of people there were online, but that 1% were the leaders and they boosted my ministry so it became effective. Church-planters can use the Internet to network their way to success.”
  10. (Thanks Tony!)

  11. ORIENTATION NOTES ON INDIA — “Laura” has been living and working in south India for four years. When she came she had no orientation to the culture or terminology differences in India English. After a season of learning the hard way, she has compiled a 10 page document of the most commonly misunderstood culture and vocabulary differences. This is designed to help short-term visitors or newcomers to India. It is by no means thorough, but she will gladly make it available to anyone who requests it by emailing <abrahamjosephathotmaildotcom>. </abrahamjosephathotmaildotcom>

  12. WEBSITE FOR CHRISTIAN MAGAZINES — Check the Magazine Training Institute’s website at http://www.magazinetraining.com for hundreds of pages of resources and valuable information for Christian magazine publishers. The site includes a directory of Christian magazines in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, a calendar of conferences, training events, published materials and courses available from a variety of sources, and nearly 100 pages of downloadable sample materials related to magazine editing, circulation, advertising, design, and management. The Magazine Training Institute is a mullt-faceted program which seeks to deploy a variety of publishing training resources in order to strengthen Christian magazine publishing around the world.

  13. BETWEEN TWO WORLDS — Being part of two worlds and two cultures isn’t easy. Cristina Larson grew up in Brazil, and even though her parents are American, she feels Brazilian. It’s Jason Erickson who is American. Or is he? His mother was born in Korea. This novel for young teens by LeAnne Hardy, explores individuality and conformity in the context of the third-culture kid experience. The author’s own two daughters, who were born in Brazil, grew up in Mozambique and went to boarding school in Kenya, have given her insights into the struggles of missionary kids caught between worlds. “Between Two Worlds” is available for $6.99 from Kregel Publications at http://www.kregel.com or by emailing <kregelbooksatkregeldotcom>. </kregelbooksatkregeldotcom>

  14. NEW WORLDWIDE PERSPECTIVES AVAILABLE — YWAM Publishing is offering a great new tool in the Perspectives Movement arsenal: the new 12-week curriculum “Worldwide Perspectives: Biblical, Historical, Strategic and Cultural Dimensions of God’s Plan for the Nations”, edited by Meg Crossman. Both classic Perspectives material (taken from the Missions Master’s degree at Fuller) as well as new insights and options are refreshingly presented in an accessible approach that can well serve local churches and their Kingdom professionals. New maps, graphics, charts, and many pictures and sidebars engage the reader and highlight the material. It can be ordered by calling 1-800-922-2143 or 480-838- 5350, via email <megcrossmanatcoxdotnet>, or on the web at http://www.ywampublishing.com (type “Worldwide Perspectives” in the Search window). Substantial discount rates are available for Perspectives Coordinators. (Thanks for the tip, Mike!) </megcrossmanatcoxdotnet>

  15. EVANGELISTIC LITERATURE OFFER BY SOON MINISTRIES — This team has spare capacity for mailing out their evangelistic paper in easy-English to individuals anywhere in the world. If any radio station or correspondence course ministry has address lists for contacts who would benefit from receiving the paper, SOON is happy to send to them. The paper can also be sent in any reasonable quantity to any Christian worker or TEFL teacher wishing to use them. Other language papers also available: African French, African Portuguese, Swahili, and a range of Fula/Fulani dialects. The team urgently needs several Fula/Fulani people (of any religion) living in the West as by-phone language helpers for article checking. http://www.gospelcom.net/guide/resources/free-papers.php The team is also seeking old telephone directories in order to do direct mail outreach to new contacts. Help is needed in obtaining directories: http://www.gospelcom.net/guide/resources/phonebook.php

  16. CHECK OUT THIS FREE SUPPORT-RAISING SOFTWARE — Built around a mailing list, the program will help the missionary keep track of names and addresses of individual partners and churches, a history of donations Important dates in the partner’s lives (birthdays, anniversaries), a history of contacts and personal touches with the ministry partner, and notes about the partner, their family, occupation, etc. You’ll also be able to store profile information about the donor, print out mailing labels & envelopes, and do merges to most popular software. It’ll print out reports about ministry partners, contributions, etc. You can even attach a picture to a supporters file so you will never forget the donor’s face! Check it out at http://www.donormanager.com/

  17. NEED SATELLITE CONNECTIVITY WITH THE WORLD? — You’re in luck. The folks at Global Resources for Computing (GRC) http://www.grcomputing.net/ have made quite a name for themselves setting up sat systems in Iraq. Check ‘em out! They’ll treat you right! :-)

  18. TRUST FUND FOR SCHOLARSHIPS — Below are two different links to the same program that might be of interest, for those interested in government service, academia or in the marketplace, not for missionaries and only for US citizens. NSEP was established by the National Security Education Act of 1991, which created a trust fund in the U.S. Treasury to provide resources for scholarships, fellowships and grants. It is guided by a mission that seeks to lead in development of the national capacity to educate U.S. citizens, understand foreign cultures, strengthen U.S. economic competitiveness, and enhance international cooperation and security. http://www.ndu.edu/nsep/ http://www.iie.org/Template.cfm?&Template=/programs/nsep/default.htm

  19. CHRISTIAN FUTURES AND STRATEGIC FORESIGHT — Here’s another “Christian Futures” consultation, Friday and Saturday Sept. 26-27, in Virginia Beach, this time focused on foresight and organizational development. This roundtable is hosted by Regent University’s graduate Leadership Studies program. A full cohort of professional futurists are joining in, including Tom & Christine Sine, Bob Dale, Peter Bishop, Jay Gary, and Andy Hines. Registration is just $79.00 — a real deal; housing is separate. They are looking at how faith can develop an organization’s “strategic foresight,” beyond routine strategic planning. See the news release on this unique gathering at: http://www.wnrf.org/cms/regent2003.shtml Thanks Jay!

  20. FIND A TEAM! — Looking to personalize your overseas involvement? A great online resource presents more than 560 websites published by teams of field workers. PeopleTeams.org is three years old and gets more than 1,600 unique visitors EVERY DAY (453,000 hits per month). Explore the world by region, by country name, by city name or by people group name. Teams place their prayer requests online, an overview of their work and stories that will amaze you! A toolbox is also built into the website to help visitors. PT is not affiliated with any single group in order to facilitate networking. Educators, mobilizers, pastors and missions committees will really appreciate this site! http://PeopleTeams.org

  1. FINALLY! A PORNOGRAPHY FILTER THAT WORKS — Have you been searching for an Internet pornography filter, just to be on the safe side? Maybe you’re looking for something for the kids’ computer, or even your own. Maybe you have Windows XP and the ones you’ve tried haven’t been fully compatible? Your wait is over. Here’s a piece of software that will protect your entire browsing/email environment … and for a reasonable price. I’ve been trying it out — and I can tell you, there is no noticeable speed hit whatsoever. It’s a great program — and it *works*. Try it out yourself for 10 days for free!!! Just log on at: http://www.integrity.com/index.php?siteid=19955 What’s more, here’s a chance to protect yourself and your computer *plus* help Brigada! For everyone who clicks through the above link in the next two weeks, then buys “Everyware” there, the designers of the software will send a $5 sponsorship to Brigada!!! With 100% of this new funding, we’d like to hire a secretary to act as a Brigada Customer Service Rep. to make address changes and handle other Brigada-related issues with the Brigada family of participants. We already have a person in mind — and her name is Penny! [my wife!!! As soon as we can get her some money flowing in, she's quitting her teaching job to do it.] So please… run, don’t walk, and set up your new Integrity Online account!!!) :-)
  2. [Note: As of Dec., 2003, only six people had subscribed to Integrity Online. As of that date, that still wasn't even enough to produce the first sponsorship check. :-( Not a very fruitful way to fund a Brigada secretary, unfortunately.]

  3. ORAL “STORYING” TOOLBOX NOW AVAILABLE — What a dynamite series of CD presentations, presented in a folksy “round table” discussion… in a professional yet informal way. Find out about world view and “orality”, see how oral learners take in information, and discover a great case study in presenting an approach for evangelism. Learn more at: http://www.fjseries.org . If you order before April 1st, you can get special start-up pricing. This set would be great to prepare cross-cultural workers in the art of “storying” — chronological story-telling. Use it in your mission’s pre-field orientation, pass the set around to your team members, or “check them out” like a library resource. They’re great!

  4. FOR THOSE WHO WANT A FILTERED ISP — As the nation’s leading filtered ISP, Integrity Online has been protecting tens of thousands of families since 1996. Their content management technology works to eliminate all obscene and inappropriate web material and unsolicited junk emails before they reach your computer. Utilizing artificial intelligence, this technology instantly analyzes over 800 different parameters of each web page, determining if the content is obscene or inappropriate. A special Integrity Online block page will appear each time someone in-advertently or intentionally tries to access an inappropriate site from your computer. Integrity Online account includes 5 fully filtered email addresses with a special feature allowing you to decide who can and can’t send you emails. The customizable filter on this service also sends all spam directly to a junk mail folder that is passcode protected. Also, if you have been thinking about getting your own website, Integrity Online will provide you with the web space to put your site online. For only $21.95 per month, you get filtered web access, 5 filtered email addresses, and personal web space from Integrity Online. This price is less than the basic service offered from most unfiltered service providers. To sign up, click on this link: http://www.integrity.com/index.php?siteid=19955 Here you can sign up online or call them toll free or via Net2phone for 1.866.449.1736 and they will answer your questions and sign you up. (What’s more, for everyone that signs up with them, they’ll sponsor Brigada to the tune of $25!!! Same as above, with 100% of this new funding, we’d like to hire a secretary to act as a Brigada Customer Service Rep. to make address changes and handle other Brigada-related issues with the Brigada family of participants. Our previous Customer Service Reps. recently informed us that they had been unable to help us for quite some time. They were volunteers… and have just run out of time. :-( So… can you help us make it possible for Penny to do this for our Brigada family? Please… run, don’t walk, and set up your new Integrity Online account!!!) :-)

  5. LEARN TO TEACH ENGLISH IN CHINA! — WTO and the 2008 Beijing Olympics have heightened the existing desire of the Chinese people to learn English. China wants trained native English Speakers. Take your TESOL in China and stay to teach or go somewhere else in the world to teach. Course is taught by qualified American instructors. The course is both academic and practical. A two-three week teaching practicum is part of the course giving you the experience and confidence you need to begin teaching immediately! The next course is scheduled for July 4 – August 15, 2003 in Shanghai, Peoples Republic of China. Please note that emails are received and read in China. Please leave out any acronyms or references to organizations. For more info, log on at: http://www.tesoltraining.com or email <tesol2001athotmaildotcom  (tesol2001athotmaildotcom)   or> <dvscottatgalacticommdotorg>. </dvscottatgalacticommdotorg>

  6. DOUG’S WIFE TO HELP CLEAN UP THE MAILING LIST — To get to the bottom of the 5,222 or so addresses that seem to be bouncing, Doug’s wife, Penny, is going to start cleaning up the place! :-) Seriously… over the next few weeks, Lord willing (if we can float it!), Penny will begin researching those addresses to determine whether or not they’re “dead” … or just temporarily out of order. Just as soon as we can get some money flowing in to replace her teacher’s salary, she’s going to dive into this full-tilt, and also be available to help Brigada participants with those pesky address changes. Finally… a staff person!!! Either way, we’re thrilled that you’ve helped grow the Brigada family by over 200 addresses in the past month alone! Thanks for spreading the word!!! If we can find just two more participants by next week, we’ll be up to 8,000 *good* addresses! Can you think of two people you can invite on the list? If so, just send them this message: “Hey… have you ever heard of Brigada Today? Each weekend, it comes to my inbox filled with tons of resources, ideas, and mobilization news about Missions and unreached peoples — and helps for the people involved in making missions happen. Try it! Just send a note to: brigada-today-subscribeatyahoogroupsdotcom  (brigada-today-subscribeatyahoogroupsdotcom)   And … by the way… your address is secret with them. They pay YahooGroups so there are no ads in the email… and they never release your address to *anybody*, even at gunpoint! :-) They’ve been sending these newsletters out weekly for over 8 years! See their back-issues at: http:/www.brigada.org (click on “Index of back issues”) Check it out!”

  11. RASCALS AT SPAMARREST — Those rascals at SpamArrest. Not long ago, a few of our Brigada participants must have started using their service. We received an email from SpamArrest saying that if these participants were to keep their Brigada subscription going, we had to log on to the SpamArrest website and read this graphic image of a word, then type it into the blank. Well it sounded harmless enough, though I’ll admit — if even 1000 of our readers suddenly set up SpamArrest accounts, we’d never get anything else done! Well either way, like a completely trusting fool, I logged on at the SpamArrest site and dutifully typed in the word. Now, yesterday, I get spam from SpamArrest itself! I’m not joking. It’s one of the most ironic twists in marketing that I’ve ever seen. The very company purporting to stop spam *engaged* in it! I wrote them to complain, but I figure… all it might do is let them know my email address is “good”, so my address will be fired up to a higher level of trust, or something. Sure it had a link on it saying, “Click here to be removed from our marketing list”, but articles everywhere have told us *not* to click there, because sometimes that’s just a trick to discover which addresses are actually *good* (current, or at least spelled correctly). The bottom line: If a spam company is going to require mail senders to fill out a “graphical word” or something, they shouldn’t *market* those who innocently take part. Oh well, … once bitten… twice shy. Just remember — we’ll never be participating in anything SpamArrest sends out again. Rascals.

  12. SPACE SHUTTLE TRACT BRINGS COMFORT IN CRISIS — The American Tract Society has now published a new tract that deals with the recent space shuttle tragedy: “Lost: Space Shuttle Columbia.” ATS says, “Many are turning to God…and the awareness of faith is being played out in all the media. The nation is searching for answers about this tragedy. This is an opportunity to help people come to know Jesus Christ as their Savior.” Read these tracts online and order them to use as a Christian witness to your world. Order from the American Tract Society, PO Box 462008, Garland TX 75046-2008 or call toll free or via net2phone 1-800- 548-7228 or log on at http://www.atstracts.org or http://www.atsdirect.org or email <atsatatstractsdotorg  (atsatatstractsdotorg)  >.

  13. BOOT CAMP FOR PERSONAL SUPPORT RAISING — Boot Camp is a practical and biblically based 2-day training seminar for new and veteran missionaries alike who need to learn how to raise their personal support or may need a new perspective on this critical area. There are two locations for 2003: (space for the seminars is limited) March 26- 27, Pasadena, CA and June 18-19, Atlanta, GA. 15. TRAVEL/HEALTH ADVICE — Taking vaccines available easily prevents many of the illnesses missionaries may face whilst on mission away from home. Passport Health, a US based travel medicine clinic, with offices throughout the United States, stresses the importance of keeping all routine vaccines, like Tetanus/Diphtheria, up to date. Other vaccines, for e.g. yellow fever, may be required, depending on your specific destination & medical history. The most common ailment, however, still remains traveler’s diarrhea, as your digestive system struggles to come to terms with the new foods & water sources of your home away from home. The treatment of choice remains taking an antibiotic, anti- diarrheal & fluid replacement. When preparing for your trip, take time to visit your local travel clinic like Passport Health. They have a wealth of up to date information with regard to your destination, which will help keep you safe & healthy during your travels. Remember; don’t let your heart’s work be ruined by falling ill. For further information, see their website at http://www.passporthealthusa.com.

  16. FRONTIER MISSIONS “SHORT COURSE” FOR ADVOCATES — Here’s a YWAM course specifically for “strategy coordinators” (catalysts, who facilitate and mobilize to link people who have knowledge, resources, personnel and expertise to take advantage of ministry opportunities amongst a people group). 20. WOULD YOU GO IF GOD CALLED YOU TO THE MISSION FIELD? — ‘When God Comes Calling’ is a compelling new book by Mike Linville recounting the inspiring, true story of how God sent an ordinary Midwestern family of five to the mission field, a mere sixty miles from the radioactive wasteland known as Chernobyl. Despite KGB raids and mysterious phone taps, government harassment and eviction, they experienced God’s amazing power and intervention as He used them to build a Bible college in the former Soviet Union, and now what some say is the first pastoral counseling training institute in the former Soviet Union, under the auspices of International Faith Initiatives, Inc. Retailing at $12.99, Brigada readers may purchase at the discounted price of $10.50. Bulk/wholesale pricing is available. 1. ORGANIZERS CONTINUE TO FINE-TUNE NEW TOOL — Organizers continue to fine-tune the “new tool” we mentioned in “NEW TOOL PRODUCES PRESENTATION NOTEBOOKS” (Jan 17 and Jan. 24th Brigada Today). They want to have 1000 copies of the CD dubbed by March 1st so they’ll be able to ship immediately. Stay tuned to Brigada Today to learn more about the product, as well as how to get special Brigada Pricing during it’s introduction to the Brigada audience. The most recent addition to the CD? They’ve now added every digital copy of a *very* well known missiology magazine. You’re going to like this one! :-)

  2. NEW SUBSCRIBERS: 200 NEW PARTICIPANTS SINCE JAN. 10 — Thanks to all those who continue to promote Brigada Today among their constituencies, members, family and friends. Remember, it’s incredibly easy to sign up. Just send a blank email to: brigada-today-subscribeatyahoogroupsdotorg Thanks! In case anyone asks, since January 25, 1995, not a single email address or identity has been divulged to any outsider. What’s more, we pledge to never sell your address at any point in the future! We’re now up to 13,007 total subscribers (with about 5,000 addresses bouncing on any given week).

  3. MISSIONS FRIENDS: STAY AT A LOVELY CABIN IN COLORADO — Here’s a Brigada friend and business missionary making a luxury cabin on his ranch available again this year for missionaries and pastors and their kind. He does have a suggested small maintenance donation, but even it goes into the ministry. A former B&B, it was described as “Elegance and the Wild West.” For the author, philosopher, meditator, recluse, or the very poor, he offers a hand-hewn “survival cabin” in a very quiet place away from it all at no charge…UNelegance and the Really Wild West.” Inquire of <johnwayneatglobal-ddotbiz> or <carolynatglobal-ddotbiz>. </carolynatglobal-ddotbiz></johnwayneatglobal-ddotbiz>

  4. CHRISTIAN COMICS TRAINING IN MEXICO CITY — The COMIX35/ROX35 ministry will be leading another Christian comics seminar in Mexico on March 21-23, 9:30am to 6:00pm, hosted by Misión Latinoamerica de México (MILAMEX). This is their only comics training scheduled for the Americas in 2003. The seminar is aimed at Christian writers or artists and other literature ministers who need training in the specifics of creating Christian comics for evangelism and discipleship. An average course includes such sessions as Writing & Scripting, Storymapping, and Illustrating from a Script & Visual Storytelling. Attendees do not need to be illustrators. The instructors will be internationally known cartoonist Nate Butler and Mexican illustrator Eric Olarte, with Canadian cartoonist Todd Byers as a teaching assistant. The course will be taught in English and Spanish, with translation. Space is limited so please contact MILAMEX as soon as possible at <ccmprismaataoldotcom>. You may send emails in either Spanish or English. In Mexico you may telephone MILAMEX at 55 5659-6930. To learn more about the COMIX35/ROX35 training ministry, visit their web site at http://www.comix35.org or email them <comix35atcomix35dotorg>. </comix35atcomix35dotorg></ccmprismaataoldotcom>

  6. TESOL TRAINING FOR THIRD-WORLD MISSIONARIES — Does anyone have any experience of providing TESOL training for missionaries who have English as a second or third language themselves? If so, the workers at a Melanesian Centre for World Missions in Papua New Guinea would like to know. They pledge to collate it for anyone interested. Write to <mscmatcltcdotacdotpg>. </mscmatcltcdotacdotpg>

  7. CATS, DOGS, & MISSIONS? — Does ‘Meology rather than Theology’ cloud your mission vision? ACMC’s (Advancing Churches in Missions Commitment) Bob Sjogren & Dr. Gerald Robison base their new book Cat & Dog Theology on a simple joke about the differences between a cat and a dog. This joke shows us the difference between “us living for God,” versus “God living for us!”, pointing us to our call to see God’s heart for all nations from Genesis to Revelation. Cat & Dog Theology retails for $9.99, but Brigada readers can get a discounted price of $7.99, or if you prefer, contact them for bulk or wholesale pricing. If you want special Brigada pricing, refer to quote BRI03 when ordering. To order call toll-free 1-866-732-6657 (USA & Canada), 706-554-1594 (Overseas), fax 706-554-7444 or email <orderatomlitdotomdotorg>. </orderatomlitdotomdotorg>

CURIOUS ABOUT TECHNOLOGY AND NON-PROFITS? — Now you can get the “skinny” by heading on over to N-TEN’s recent survey report, “Nonprofits, NTAPs, and Information Technology,” prepared by Paul-Brien McInerney. Check out the 2-page Executive Summary or the complete 18- page report at http://www.nten.org/reports . (Thanks Ed!)

Combined conferences by ACMC/Finishers Project are slated for San Diego, Feb 28-Mar 1; Pasadena (LA Area) March 28-29; and in Northern California (Sacramento) April 4-5. These are safe places to explore options and opportunties for you and your church in missions. Do not live in the West? You can have your own mission conference on line at http://www.finishers.org to receive a shopping cart of organizations that can use you with your unique set of interests and skills as an individual or couple. Not on the web? Email officeatfinishersdotorg for brochures.

If you are interested in hosting a table with your ministry and/or related book and tape display space is still available. Every effort will be made to accommodate you.

  13. WANT CONTENT FILTERING AT THE ENTERPRISE LEVEL? — Look no further than GRC at: http://www.grcomputing.net/netsweeper.html They might just have everything you need.

  14. KNOW OF A VIDEO DESIGNED TO WIN MUSLIMS? — If so, an organization in Germany would like to find out about it. Email them at: <106370dot3020atcompuservedotcom>. (If you’re concerned about security, forward your information to someone in the clear and have them relay it on to the Germany email address.) The ultimate goal for this quest is to create apologetic videos that scratch an itch where one doesn’t exist, so this German group is trying to get an idea of what exists so far. Thanks!

  15. MISSIONS FEST VANCOUVER CONTINUES TO GROW — Capacity crowds met at Canada Place on January 31 – February 2nd. A 3-day estimated aggregate of 35,000 attended the 6 plenary sessions, 6 youth rallies, the 98 seminars, and visited the 230 mission exhibits. Featured speakers were Tony Campolo, Judy Mbugua, Ron Pearce, Ross Hastings and Rick Love. Web site: http://www.mfest.bc.ca

  16. DOCTORS & HEALTHCARE PROS: HELP WIN TEENS TO CHRIST — Impact teenagers internationally. Speak on a topic related to your profession at student assemblies in four public and private high schools a day for one week in a Latin American city. Spanish language would be an asset, but interpreters will be provided. Some media materials are available for speakers. Sample topics include Teens at Risk of Sexually Transmitted Diseases; Be Aware of Abuse; The Value of Life (cloning, abortion, euthenasia, etc.); Drug Abuse; Teen Anger Management; etc. A hispanic youth evangelist will make a moral, ethical and spiritual application after you speak. On average 340 students respond to surrender their lives to Christ in four days and are counseled by the local host church. Proclaim International, Inc. is conservative in doctrine and relationships, and has offered this service to high schools and local host churches for five years. If you’re interested, contact John via tel. (561) 394-9808 or email <proclaimhisgloryatjunodotcom> or log on at: http://www.borderstone.com/proclaim . </proclaimhisgloryatjunodotcom>

  17. LOOKING AT THE ‘DAUGHTERS OF ISHMAEL’ — Lifting the Veil, the newest book by Dr. Phil Parshall & Julie Parshall has just been released by Gabriel Publishing. Having worked and lived in Muslim Bangladesh & the Philippines for the past 4 decades, Phil & Julie understand the issues, heartaches, and dangers facing Muslim women today. They bring a sensitive perspective to this thoughtful, sobering book that examines the controversy of female circumcision and proof of virginity, the heartache of arranged marriages, divorce, polygamy, ands the status of women living in a male-dominated world. This book will not provide you with easy answers, but will prompt you to begin praying for these “daughters of Ishmael” and give you sensitive awareness to life beyond the veil. Lifting the Veil retails for $12.99. Brigada readers get a 20% discounted price $10.39, just by asking for it. Or, ask for bulk or wholesale pricing. Just tell them “Quote BRI03″ when ordering. To order call toll-free 1-866-732-6657 (USA & Canada), 706- 554-1594 (Overseas), fax 706-554-7444 or email <orderatomlitdotomdotorg>. </orderatomlitdotomdotorg>

  1. NEW TOOL PRODUCES PRESENTATION NOTEBOOKS — This past week, I gave out presentation notebooks packed with information about a creative access nation to a new team headed there, using material produced from that new tool we mentioned last week. (See “NEW TOOL HIGHLIGHTS COUNTRIES AND PEOPLES OF THE WORLD” in last week’s edition of Brigada Today.) It was pretty impressive. Lots of people group profiles — one page each — CIA Factbook stuff, US State Dept. Background notes, maps, lists, … the works. And all of it was copyright-released. The teams really appreciated it… and with a simple bubble-jet printer, the new CD-ROM tool made it work great. The name of this tool? “Countries and Peoples of the World”, produced by ILS. It’s going to be released first right here on Brigada… and if you order during the special exclusive Brigada release period, you’ll get it for $20 less than anyone else in the world! Stay tuned for more release information. You’ll hear it first right here in Brigada Today.

  2. POSTMISSION: WORLD MISSION BY A POSTMODERN GENERATION — Just published, this book comes out of the Holy Island Roundtable, a 5-day 2001 gathering of GenXer leaders from mission agencies all over Europe, North America and New Zealand. With chapters written by several different Xer mission leaders, it looks at ways in which mission agencies need to change so that GenXers can thrive in their ministry (rather than the more common experiences of frustration and disillusion). It has sections on the GenX outlook, leadership of and by Xers, why postmodernity isn’t all bad, and how to develop generational harmony in mission teams. Available from Paternoster Publishing in the UK for £8.99 http://www.paternoster-publishing.com and coming soon to Gabriel Resources in the US for $15.99 http://www.gabriel-resources.com . ISBN 1-84227-165-2. Also check out the website at http://www.postmission.com or contact the editor Richard Tiplady <richardattipladydotorgdotuk  (richardattipladydotorgdotuk)  > .

  1. SHARPEN YOUR INTERPERSONAL SKILLS THIS FALL — One of the major reasons missionaries come home from the field is unresolved interpersonal conflict. This workshop is designed to teach and reinforce the skills of effective interpersonal relationships as well as personal growth. Issues discussed, from a thoroughly Biblical perspective, include building trust, listening and communication skills, giving and receiving confrontation, living in community, managing stress, maintaining margin, being an encourager, etc. Attention is also given to identifying the skills appropriate to the missionary’s destination culture. 1. REPORTEDLY THE LOWEST PHONE RATES ON INT’L CALLS — United World Telecom http://www.phone-access.com/uwt/ reportedly offers some of the lowest phone rates around. They specialize in low rates to Africa, South American and Asia. You can reportedly use the service in callback form from any country in the world, from any phone in North America using UWT’s toll free number, and can even get your own US “follow me” toll free number to give to friends and family. All calls to this private toll free number will be automatically re-directed to your phone number of choice anywhere in the world. Very convenient and great to give to supporters, friends and family — especially since it can be used by travelers! There are no sign-up fees, no monthly minimum fees. You ONLY pay for the calls you make, and there’s even online sign up and online billing. The quality is excellent and the cost of calls are the same regardless of direction (Japan to USA is 10 CPM – USA to Japan is also 10 CPM). To learn more about Callback, how it works and how to sign up online visit: http://www.phone-access.com/uwt or write uwtatphone-accessdotcom with any questions that you might have.

  2. HOW’D BRIGADA TODAY GET RID OF THE YAHOOGROUPS ADS? — That seems to be one of the most popular questions asked these days. Here’s the scoop: Back when we were distributing Brigada Today via eGroups, the eGroups people offered a special whereby you could pay a fee to “buy out” the ads. Next thing you know, Yahoo purchased eGroups and the whole thing became YahooGroups. Since that time, I haven’t been able to verify that YahooGroups offers the same deal — but they *did* apparently “grandfather” us in without ads, to honor the previous deal that eGroups had sold. So — the bottom line: I don’t know of any way that new YahooGroups moderators can get rid of those pesky ads on current groups. They can be fairly . . . risque’, eh? Have you seen the one with the scantily clad lady and that bothersome wireless Internet video camera? Yikes. I asked my son, who in the world would want to buy a wireless Internet video camera anyway, and then we saw an ad in the local newspaper about how that little gizmo had become one of the most popular-selling items on the Net. Great. And our groups just keep boosting it along. :-) Anyway… sorry I can’t be of more help! Maybe some Brigada participant has figured them out!

7) HOW ‘BOUT THAT SULFNBK.EXE “VIRUS”! :-)

Have you been “hit” by the sulfnbk.exe “virus” yet? This thing is sweeping the Internet so fast, we don’t even know what’s hitting us! Here’s the way it works. Someone emails you and says… “Whew… this is serious; check your Windows folder now to see if you’ve got the dreaded sulfnbk.exe file. Yikes! It’s a virus! Erase it immediately.” So we go off deleting files on our computers without even verifying the purpose of the file! Yikes. My buddy and I joked that we could send the same message, except tell people to erase “Win.exe” or “Explorer.exe”. Can’t you hear it? “This Explorer virus automatically begins searching your hard drive for credit card numbers. Once it finds them, it emails them to an anonymous email address in Amsterdam. Dreadful. Erase it now.” Gang… when will we learn. Practically *all* the warnings we get — 99% of them — are hoaxes. Do yourself a favor and send an email to <opcatbrigadadotorg> to learn how to spot them. And… for those hit by the sulfnbk.exe virus, good luck reading long file names. Because your deletion *is* the virus.</opcatbrigadadotorg>

TESOL PLUS TAYLOR MADE!

A TESOL course is offered at Youth With A Mission, Lebanon, PA USA, September 24, 2001 to October 19, 2001. This intensive and highly academic course qualifies the graduate to teach English as a second language to most countries of the world. In addition to a certificate, a graduate receives:

  • A job skill that opens doors too hard to enter countries
  • A way to reach people with whom you are already working

MARY POPPINS, WHERE ARE YOU?

Are you (or do you know) a mature, Christian woman who would like to volunteer to be a “nanny” for a stressed out and overly busy mission family? Many such families need some help with their kids and other domestic chores. Anywhere from six weeks to a year or even more would be a great blessing. A ministry named “Mission Nannys” has appeared to help fill that need. Mission Nannys matches requests from missionaries for domestic help and nannies with those women who would like to help. More at http://MissionNannys.org, or email Betty at bettyatmissionnannysdotorg  (bettyatmissionnannysdotorg)  .

LOOKING FOR A GREAT WAY TO SHARE YOUR PICTURES ONLINE?

Try clicking over to… http://www.clubphoto.com Its creators have brought together seemingly the best collection of tools — for computers and palmtops — for seemingly the greatest price: free! That’s right. . . you can upload your images and view them on the web for free. Invite others to view them too, we understand. Membership is free, apparently, though you’ll sure be tempted to buy all the special items for sale with your pictures pasted on them! (Mugs, shirts, etc.) This would be a great way for on-field workers to share photos with folks back home . . . yet they wouldn’t have to put together a whole website. Check it out!

Thanks to for hosting the Brigada mailing list.
Emphasis is placed on items relating to unreached peoples and challenges faced by those reaching them cross-culturally.

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us! See the note above if you’d like to submit items for Brigada Today. Thanks for understanding. Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.

Church pages can be used for evangelism, if carefully designed for this purpose. To obtain a free copy by email autoresponder, send a blank email to: web-evangelism-getdot35atlistsdotgospelcomdotnet  (web-evangelism-getdot35atlistsdotgospelcomdotnet)  .

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list.

Thank you.

NEW “HIS” DATABASE NEARLY READY FOR “PRIMETIME”

Have you heard about the new “Harvest Information System” (HIS) being birthed as a follow-up to AD2000 & Beyond’s data on unreached peoples? As it turns out, the HIS “Registry of Peoples” (ROP) list may well be one of the most complete lists of the world’s peoples publicly available. The People/Country table presently contains 16,391 records. By contrast, the new edition of the World Christian Encyclopedia contains 12,582 entries. As the HIS Peoples list has been built, the attempt has been made to err on the side of inclusiveness, not wanting any peoples to be inadvertently omitted. Stay tuned to future editions of Brigada Today for further developments on this project.

CYBER-EVANGELISM – IS IT EFFECTIVE?

A survey studying the effectiveness of Cyber Evangelism as part of a bible college course is being undertaken by Mick in the UK. If anyone is involved with cyber- evangelism, of whatever kind (web based, chat room, e-mail etc), then it would be a great help if you could complete a web-based questionnaire on the topic. The URL is: http://www.mleggett.uklinux.net/weq (the last letter is a lower case Q for questionnaire). The deadline for completions is 28th February, and the results will be posted back to the web in June/July 2001. Any participants will be emailed when the results are available. Further information is available from ieqhelpatmission-itdotorg  (ieqhelpatmission-itdotorg)  .

THE BACKPAGE: MORE ON HOW GOOD TEAMS BECOME GREAT TEAMS

books and pen So far, in our series on how to good teams become great teams, we’ve covered these four key components:
  1. A clear sense of purpose
  2. Motivated team members
  3. Determination
  4. Gifted team members

Last week, after presenting the “gifted team members” item, we received an email from a prospective missionary who wrote:

“Sure, I know that I should wait until next week and see what you are going to offer as the ‘other issues’, but I can’t wait. I found what you wrote this week to be a little discouraging. I mean, I’m not all that gifted. I have my strengths, and I think God can use them somewhere, but I don’t come close to the kind of giftedness you describe. So, I don’t think I would qualify as a member of a great team… Maybe I should just stay home? Just for argument’s sake, of course. I love what you write, and getting Brigada each week! Keep it up!”

I replied… “I hear you, brother. Just remember… Suppose our “game” was basketball. The greatness of Michael Jordan would make us all want to stay home. I’m not suggesting that we hold out only for the ideal. But what I am saying is that as we not be satisfied with slouchy performance on something like, say, a skill issue… take language for instance. One of our workers is currently leaving for a field saying, “I can get by with the language level I already have.” I’m saying he should go to language school for six months first. Because I want him to shine. So… whatever it is you’re called to do, I’m saying become as skilled in it as you can. Work as hard at it as you can possibly work. Make sense? Did you know that, as a freshman, Michael Jordan didn’t make the cut on his high school basketball team? Needless to say, he practiced that entire year — probably harder than any senior did in the entire high school. By the way, as a sophomore, he made it. :-)

More on “great teams” next week.
Doug
