6) REPLACEMENT FOR INFOBEAT? — Dennis says he’s finally found a good replacement for InfoBeat:

Check it out — for 6 months at no charge.

7) APOLOGY FOR “DAMASCUS” QUIP — Oops! I’ll admit it! I shouldn’t have been so flippant with the quote about Paul’s trip to Damascus (“the best thing since the light on the Road to Damascus” in the item on the Alpha Course, “1) ALPHA COURSE OFFERS PROMISING HELP FOR DISCIPLERS”, Jan. 4th Brigada Today). Apologies if anyone was offended. What I really meant to say was that the results enjoyed by those implementing the Alpha Course are so stellar, they’ll seem . . . nearly miraculous!

8) WORLD CHRISTIANITY 1970-2000 — This book is now available from William Carey Library Publishers. The author, Dr. Winston Crawley, seeks to continue the overview and analysis of current progress in world Christianity contained in Dr. Ralph Winter’s work Twenty-Five Unbelievable Years: 1945-1969 and Kenneth Scott Latourette’s A History of the Expansion of Christianity. This summary of recent world Christian history provides a great backdrop for believers to face the new millennium with hope, determination and an expectation of seeing God work in the world in even greater ways. 10) THE BACKPAGE: DOING INTERNET BY SATPHONE — As I compose this edition of _Brigada Today_, I’m on a plane home from serving in a war-torn nation in Central Asia for nearly 2 weeks. In this particular nation, there are probably a total of 150 working phones for a population of *millions* of people. That’s one of the reasons why I took a satphone to connect with my office and family. The most effective deal I found for voice *and* data was through InTouch. Write the rep. at <daiatintouchusadotcom> and tell him you heard about it from Doug Lucas and maybe he’ll knock off just a *few* dollars for you. If you’re headed to Europe, Africa, the Middle East or South/Central Asia (in other words, about all the 10/40 Windwow), ask to rent the Thuraya model. Trouble is, it’ll be pricey… something like $100/week or more. But in judging the alternative (no way to call for help if bandits are approaching from the North, South, East *and* West). With the Thuraya, I connected first time nearly every time, at 19.2K to the Internet. I took along an Iridium satphone and typically connected at *much* lower data speeds for it. Maybe 2 or 3 K — like nearly stone age! :-) But if your work is taking you somewhere other than the Thuraya coverage (see the coverage footprint at www.thuraya.com) maybe you’ll have to give more thought to the Iridium – which works anywhere on the world. Either way, per-minute rates are indeed steep…. somehthing like $2/minute, though we won’t know for sure ’til they’re bliled on my credit card. You can also buy the Thuraya in the Dubai airport duty-free, but the only packages they sell is the “Airport pacakge” with prepaid sim cards, a real hassle in that you have to always buy new cards. That’s why Dai Rees is such a good deal then… because he sells the subsriptions on a month-by-month basis. Try him… You just might like it! (By the way… I get no benefit of any kind by promoting him. In fact, I had to pay the normal full price like anyone else. I’m just “one beggar telling another where to get bread.”

The next camp is at the Triple R Ranch in Chesapeake, Virginia from February 7-10, followed by another in Spain from June 1-10. 13) THE BACK PAGE: DEFINING LEADERSHIP

Our organization recently held its 3rd summit of team leaders and, as always, I learn more from this growing group of top-notch workers than I ever can possibly give back. Since our time together, I’ve been mulling over in my mind how to define leadership. I started out thinking about it in terms of activity. I figured leaders should be people who have somehow learned how to get things done… so maybe others rally around them because, well, these would-be teammates see the action and they want to be a part of it. Not only is it more *fun* to be a part of the action, but also it just feels more productive… more effective… more fruitful.

But then I started realizing that some great leaders didn’t really *do* things. They *are*. Gandhi is an example. He stood up for a set of *values*… so people ended up standing up for *him*. They were attracted by his ideas, rather than his actions. Sure he took steps that were visible… tangible… but in the end, it was more a matter of his *principles* than his *tasks*.

As my thinking continued to evolve, I moved on to a phase of focusing on great leaders and their *relationships*. In a way, that’s part of what defined success for Jesus. After all, he never wrote a book (directly) nor did he record any motivational tapes. If his teachings were going to last, it would be because of the notes made by those who followed him. And that’s exactly what happened. The Bible is *full* of eye witness testimony by those who loved him most. More than anything else, it seems, Jesus majored in spending time with *people* … his “teammates” (the disciples), needy folks, and even those who didn’t seem to *think* that they needed him.

So now I’ve come full circle. I’m beginning to conclude that great leaders maybe have all *three* facets. They learn how to get things done… they stand for noble principles… and they invest time in *people*. Part of the magic is… great leaders come to believe that those people are not “projects” but someone to love.

So… I think I’m starting to get it. And I’m further thinking that if we want to train our new disciples to be great leaders in their local churches, we’ve got to model it for them. We’ve got to churn out the work, retain those guiding principles, and love people. I’m starting to believe that only *then* will we really make great leaders.

What do you think? Got an opinion? Let me know at <dlucasatteamexpansiondotorg>.</dlucasatteamexpansiondotorg>

Thanks and may 2002 be a blessed one for you, your team, your family, and your ministry!

7) HOW ‘BOUT THAT SULFNBK.EXE “VIRUS”! :-)

Have you been “hit” by the sulfnbk.exe “virus” yet? This thing is sweeping the Internet so fast, we don’t even know what’s hitting us! Here’s the way it works. Someone emails you and says… “Whew… this is serious; check your Windows folder now to see if you’ve got the dreaded sulfnbk.exe file. Yikes! It’s a virus! Erase it immediately.” So we go off deleting files on our computers without even verifying the purpose of the file! Yikes. My buddy and I joked that we could send the same message, except tell people to erase “Win.exe” or “Explorer.exe”. Can’t you hear it? “This Explorer virus automatically begins searching your hard drive for credit card numbers. Once it finds them, it emails them to an anonymous email address in Amsterdam. Dreadful. Erase it now.” Gang… when will we learn. Practically *all* the warnings we get — 99% of them — are hoaxes. Do yourself a favor and send an email to <opcatbrigadadotorg> to learn how to spot them. And… for those hit by the sulfnbk.exe virus, good luck reading long file names. Because your deletion *is* the virus.</opcatbrigadadotorg>

20011125 Brigada Today

In this issue….

--------------------------------------

IN MEMORY OF BOB & PATTI MAYHEW, OUR WEB VOLUNTEERS

This past week saw the passing of a great couple for Christ, Bob & Patti Mayhew, both 52 years old. Bob had previously served as a professor at the University of California’s Riverside campus, where he was responsible for PC support for Academic Computing in the Computing & Communications department. Over the years, Bob had developed some *great* tools in Perl that gradually helped him transfer hundreds and hundreds of pages of Brigada issues into HTML language for the web. Patti was quite an artist in her own right. (The logo used for Brigada Today at brigada.org was her creation.) Their tragic deaths this past week, within minutes of one another, signals a great loss for the entire Brigada family. Here was a duo who worked without pay since August 18, 1995 (ever since Brigada participant Paul Lay had recommended them to the job — Thanks Paul)! Here was a married couple totally sold out to missions. Bob had entertained long-term visions of serving some Islamic community in a future era of his life. On behalf of the entire Brigada family, we’ve sent flowers to the memorial service taking place on this very day, Nov. 30th, at a church in Riverside, CA. On an enclosed card, we wrote a message thanking Bob & Patti’s 2 surviving (adult) children for their parents’ incredible and selfless service record, signed by the “Nearly 10,000 members of the Brigada online family.”
--------------------------------------

IN HONOR OF BOB & PATTI, THE MAYHEW MEMORIAL FUND

In honor of Bob & Patti, Team Expansion has set up a special trust — the Mayhew Memorial Fund — with the proceeds to be used to specifically underwrite the expenses of the Brigada website and email network. (Team Expansion is a non-profit, 501(c)3 incorporation, so for those in the USA, contributions are tax-deductible.) At Bob’s request, we had always kept it a secret that Bob had funded most of Brigada’s expenses since about 1998. He never wanted any attention. In fact, in most cases, he refused to even publicize or even mention his own name on the website. So it seems somehow fitting that a gift in his name would continue the legacy for which he invested so much of himself, his time, and his treasure. Contributions in Bob & Patti’s name can be sent to: Mayhew Memorial Fund, 3700 Hopewell Rd., Louisville, KY 40299. Please make the check payable to Team Expansion and write “Mayhew Memorial Fund” in the memo line. A tax-deductible receipt will be sent to USA donors and all others will be sent a thank-you note via email (please don’t forget to provide yours). Those wishing to use the web can go to
http://www.brigada.org/sponsor.html and click on the “Donate” link at the bottom of the page to make a donation using a credit card or from a PayPal account. (If for some reason the Brigada site drops out during this transitional period, you could also use the “Donate” link at:
http://www.teamexpansion.org , on the righthand side of the page.)
Please be sure to mention in the “Special Instructions” box that the gift is for the Mayhew Memorial Fund. In addition, please make a note regarding how you’d like your name to be shown on the sponsors page. If you’d like the gift to be anonymous, just mark it as such. Note that it might take us a while to figure out Bob’s system to update everything. Thanks for your patience as we get it going again. Thanks in advance to any who feel led to contribute.

BRIGADA WEBSITE RUNNING SILENTLY, WITHOUT ITS HELMSMAN

So, if I can speak candidly for a moment, it’s kind of strange today for me to visit www.brigada.org . Really, truth be known, that’s Bob’s site, not Brigada’s. It’s hard for me to put into words what I feel as I click there… the way the web pages still obediently pop up, one after another, running silently, just as if Bob is somehow in the background, serving them personally. To me, it’s almost haunting. It probably sounds corny, but I can’t help but think of some kind of old mystery movie, where the wheel of an old ship has been tied, with the sails set so the bow heads into the wind. The helmsman is missing, having deserted his post for the time being. But the ship sails on into the dark. Those hundreds and hundreds of files, representing hundreds and hundreds of late nights, stand today as his legacy. May God bless his grown daughter, son-in-law, and son. May He raise up others like Bob & Patti for the challenges of tomorrow… and may Bob’s name ever be remembered as synonymous with selfless servanthood and extreme endurance.

Our tribute today isn’t just to Bob & Patti, it’s to all those like the Mayhews, who serve daily in silent ministry for the good of the Kingdom, in hopes that unreached peoples everywhere can one day know Christ as King! To all those servants, we offer thanks . . . and hopes for God’s richest blessings. …

SOME ARE RECEIVING 10 INFECTED EMAILS PER DAY

And I’m one of them. Believe it or not, there are some who are receiving literally 10 infected emails per day these days (i.e., over the past week). Most are due to incredibly virulent forms of w32dotbadtransdotbatmmdothtml . Read the full security alert on this one at:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/ (click on the “Security Alert” for the badtrans virus). How does one avoid getting badtrans? You guessed it: Don’t click on the file attachment, make sure your virus definitions are up to date, and finally, make sure you’ve disabled Outlook’s tendency to automatically execute macros and visual basic scripts. The trojan worm attachment will typically have file names that look like:
CARD.Doc.pif or NEWS_DOC.mp3.scr. But the virus (or more properly, the worm) randomly chooses these file names from a list including names like “PICS, IMAGES, README, New_Napster_Site, NEWS_DOC, HAMSTER, YOU_ARE_FAT!, SEARCHURL, SETUP, CARD, ME_NUDE, Sorry_about_yesterday, S3MSONG, DOCS, HUMOR, and FUN.” The trick is… the final extension for the entire file name will *always* end in “pif” or “scr”. For the benefit of all your friends on the Net, *please* make sure your virus definitions are up to date and don’t click on any attachments ending in those extensions. Thanks!

GOT CREATIVE FINANCIAL STRATEGY EXAMPLES?

Don in Colorado Springs is doing some research for a project dealing with creative strategic use of finances for kingdom work. If you know of any great examples of how people are defying the cultural norm of spending their resources on themselves and freeing up those finances for missions, please pass them along! Of particular interest would be people who have learned to live off 50% or less of their income, channeling the other 50% or more towards unreached peoples, OR people who have strategically invested for the express purpose of using the extra income for missions. In one example, two families decided to live together in a large house, sharing expenses, and freeing up thousands per year which they channeled towards the kingdom. If you know of other examples, please pass them to Don at <niemyerataoldotcom>. Once his report is completed he’ll send it in and we’ll make it available for all of us via an autoresponder.

OUT OF MORMONISM: A WOMAN’S TRUE STORY

Honest and eye-opening, OUT OF MORMONISM takes readers where few will ever see–behind the doors of the Mormon church and into the lives of a family seeking to leave. Part apologetic and part autobiography, the book begins with an explanation of how author Judy Robertson and her family were drawn into Mormonism, how they were constantly lived a life that never quite measured up even though they were “temple-worthy Mormons,” and how they finally found their freedom. OUT OF MORMONISM also compares Mormon beliefs with biblical truths. A great resource for those participating in the Salt Lake City Olympic Outreach in February 2002. Plus you can now get special rates for ministries! For orders: 1-800-328-6109 (int’l: 1-952-829-2500) or email <csatbethanyhousedotcom> More information at http://www.BethanyHouse.com .

______________________________________________________________________

1) HOW TO INCREASE PRAYER SUPPORT? — Most cross-cultural workers agree that their number one need is a high level of prayer support. However, transforming that need into a consistent reality is often an ongoing challenge. If you have a method or idea that has worked well for you or your organization, Kerry would love to hear about it. Possibly you know a website with some creative ideas. Send your best ideas to <khawkinsatteamexpansiondotorg>. In a couple of weeks, he’ll share his findings with us and we’ll publish the results here as an auto-responder. Thanks Kerry! </khawkinsatteamexpansiondotorg>

______________________________________________________________________

2) OPTIONS FOR TRAINING YOUR SHEPHERDS? — The International School of Ministry offers a 159 hour International Curriculum for the training of shepherds. In cooperation with Vision University of California, they offer not only their own diploma, but an Associates of Biblical Studies to all registered students. The International Curriculum is available in over 50 languages on VHS, VCD, Audio Cassette and via internet. Some of the contributors are Jack Hayford, Reinhard Bonnke, Dick Eastman, A. L. Gill, LaMar Boschman, etc.

It is the work of Pastor Berin Gilfillan who traveled with Reinhard Bonnke for more than three years. In those travels he saw the mass conversion of 100s of thousands and he also saw how small was the available body of Christ to absorb such huge numbers of new believers. There are presently over 3000 schools operating around the world. Only 300 of them are the United States. One of the newest is in Corpus Christi (Body of Christ), TX. ISOM is part of Good Shepherd Ministries Intl. P.O. Box 368, Los Alamitos, CA 90720-0368, USA, 800.901.8175 or 001-562.594.9123 or fax 001-562.594.6143. Their website is http://www.isom.org . Their email address is infoatisomdotorg.

______________________________________________________________________

3) HOW DOES ONE LOCATE EXISTING GOSPEL FILMS? — Suppose you knew someone who wanted to find… “The Mystics” (originally used by Campus Crusade), “The Lie”, and “He Restoreth My Soul” — three films from the past. Is there a web-search tool that can help? A Brigada participant wants to know . . . and the answer might be useful for many. Drop us a line if you’ve got a solution and we’ll publish the answer for all. Thanks!

______________________________________________________________________

4) GLOBAL YOUTH MINISTRY REPORT — Doing youth ministry outside the USA or training youth workers globally? A new free service, “The Global Youth Ministry Report” sends out an e-mail to find out what’s working globally in such areas as “Training Student Leadership,” “Reaching Lost Youth,” or “Developing Indigenous Worship for Youth.” Then, a writer compiles this global wisdom and e-mails back a free report. In this way, youth workers glean ideas from practitioners in various cultures that may well work in their own setting. Finally, each report will be archived at http://www.reach-out.org in the “ARTICLES” section (Whew! What a great site!) so that further input from readers can add to this global I.Q. of youth ministry. Interested in this free wisdom exchange? E-mail Steve, in cooperation with Reach Out Youth Solutions, at <smilleroatmindspringdotcom> . </smilleroatmindspringdotcom>

5) A CASE STUDY IN PARTNERSHIPS — Nepal, the only official Hindu kingdom in the world, was closed to the outside world until the 1950’s when the king opened the country for development and education. The 1990 democratic revolution further opened the doors to the gospel. Reportedly, for the first time in Nepal history, the Nepal government has turned over a district government hospital to a community based non governmental organization (NGO). The organization, ‘Human Development and Community Services’ (HDCS), is a Nepali Christian NGO. HDCS is partnering with MMD, a European medical mission that will send equipment and medical personnel. Future Nepal government – Nepali Christians relationships will depend upon positive results. There will be much attention on HDCS. More information can be obtained about HDCS, the Lamjung District Community Hospital Project and opportunities for service by logging on to the HDCS website: http://www.hdcsnepal.org .

EuroTrain (for leaders age 16-22) is a completely unique experience…and an answer to the new paradigms needed to develop new generations of leaders. During July 2002, EuroTrain groups will travel through five nations in Europe learning leadership, developing ministry skills, getting a grasp of their destiny, gaining a heart for unreached peoples around the world, and creating a plan for long-term personal and leadership growth. HOW DO WE REPLACE INFOBEAT? (EMAIL NEWS SOURCES)

Brigada autoresponder Looking for some news source that will replace InfoBeat? Want to get news into your inbox on a daily basis? David sought answers (in a previous Brigada Today) and has stood well on his promise, and thanks to his faithful follow-through, we can now publish his findings. Just send a note to: email-newsatbrigadadotorg  (email-newsatbrigadadotorg)   to get his full report. Unfortunately, according to David, the replacements weren’t tremendous… but he does give some options. Check it out. Thanks David!

OPPORTUNITIES TO MINISTER TO MUSLIMS

Have the events of Sept. 11th put to an end any hopes of service in the Muslim world? Not on your life. For example, listen to Jeff, from Mission to Unreached Peoples: “Yes – we have numerous teaching opportunities (even invitations!) to serve the Lord in Muslim countries. Some positions have stipends, as well as additional financial help for housing and transportation.” Certainly the world situation compels us to be all the more vigilant in caring for the personal safety of our family and friends. But does that mean doors are closing. Quite the contrary. Listen again to Jeff, describing at the very least, mission opportunities that he’s trying to fill: “All you need to be an effective tool for the Lord is to have a heart for missions, a degree of any kind, and be a native English speaker. You will be blessed and you will be a blessing. The Lord can use you!” For more information, contact Jeff mupinfoatmupdotorg  (mupinfoatmupdotorg)   in the USA or via Net2Phone at 888-847-6950 or 206-781-3151 or check out http://www.mup.org.

THE FOLKS AT JOSHUA PROJECT II FORGE ON

Curious about what happened to all the AD2000 & Beyond unreached people data? Wonder no more. The legacy lives on . . . in the form of Joshua Project II. They continue to refine their already-completed comprehensive ethno-cultural list of all the world’s peoples. Check it out (viewing and download) at: http://www.joshuaproject.net/datacomplete.html Now, during the next few months, they want to attach various Church Planting progress indicators to that list e.g. % Evangelicals, % Adherents and several others such as Operation World Progress Indicators, status of various ministries tools of Bible Translation progress, Christian Radio Broadcasting, Audio Recordings and Jesus Film.

Then they’ll try to establish criteria to identify the least reached (possibly something like less than 2% Evangelical) and then publish a global comprehensive least reached list. Next they’ll tackle what might be the most important phase — to begin promoting the comprehensive least-reached peoples list and gathering ministry commitments for networking purposes. They’ll also expand the JPII website to be interactive to allow queries such as: “Show me the ten largest groups without a Jesus Film that are considered unreached? Show me all groups in the 10/40 Window that are below 5% Christian and have audio recordings available. Show me the 20 top most adoptable” peoples.”

Let’s all pray that God will bless their work. They are the “Nehemiahs” trudging through the city in the dark, hoping to gain for us a more accurate picture of the walls that most need rebuilding.

“LÁMPARA” FOR THEIR FEET

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world and Spain is the European country with the fewest number of evangelical believers. Now, an evangelistic web page has been launched at http://www.lamparaes.com with the theme “Practical Wisdom” targeting the unchurched in Spain. “Lámpara Es” is the Spanish translation of the opening phrase of Psalm 119:105 – “Thy word is a LAMP unto my feet…” Gregg infoatlamparaesdotcom  (infoatlamparaesdotcom)   describes the site as “pre-evangelistic” and is part of the larger strategy of the Spanish organization “Evangelismo En Accion”, which has a 27-year history of church planting in Spain. LET’S WATCH OUR METAPHORS

Last year at Fuller Seminary, a relatively small group of missions leaders helped us all to be more precise and, well, Christian in our communications. This is not “bleeding hearts” stuff to be ignored. Do these words look familiar: “target,” “conquer,” “army,” “crusade,” “mobilize,” “beachhead,” “advance,” “enemy,” and “battle?” Given the events of the past month and watching world leaders try and stumble, it seems timely to resurrect such reminders. Here are some of their conclusions:

  1. Metaphors are potent in shaping thought and compelling action. “Warfare” metaphors and terminology have been misused in Christian mission communications.
  2. People are responding to the call to glorify God among the nations, follow Christ into servanthood and sacrifice, and lift up the downtrodden to a life of great purpose and meaning. These are themes around which we need to develop metaphors to summon God’s people to God’s mission.
  3. The new dynamics of globalization and instant global electronic information technologies are rapidly changing the context of our communication. The world will read or hear whatever we say. The group closed by summarizing, “We desire to honor God and glorify Him as we engage in communicating His love to the peoples of the earth. Where reflection on our words has revealed less than Christlike attitudes or circumstances where we have unintentionally hurt others, we are eager to repent, apologize, and do better.”

We’ll try to follow their recommendations here — and suggest others do also.

At this 1-day session, participants will be given an overview of the whole comics creative process and highlights of the ROX35 course topics, including Writing & Scripting, Visual Storytelling, Editing, and Cultural Considerations. This is not a “how to draw” class and attendees do not need to be illustrators. The presenter/instructor is Nate Butler, who has worked on over a dozen internationally known characters, including “The Muppets,” “Tiny Toons,” and “The Jetsons,” and has packaged and published Christian comics. During scheduled breaks and lunch, Mr. Butler will be available for additional one-on-one discussion and consultation requests, as time permits, as well as for prayer and fellowship. Registration fee: 15 pounds (includes handout materials, a morning and afternoon coffee break, but not lunch). Seating is limited to just 12 people, so advance registration is necessary. Email ROX35atrox35dotorg  (ROX35atrox35dotorg)   or ROX35Mediaataoldotcom  (ROX35Mediaataoldotcom)   for registration information.

SIRCAM VIRUS EPIDEMIC

virus Remember the earlier item about the Sircam virus seemingly become rampant in Christian circles? “SIRCAM TROJAN “WORM” (VIRUS) SEEMS RAMPANT IN CHRISTIAN CIRCLES” I was wrong. It’s rampant everywhere. I have a hunch that by now, most of us have seen those words, “I send you this file to have your advice.” One Brigada participant wrote last week saying he had received 30 Sircam-infected emails in one day! Bottom line: Get some good antivirus software, enable it (so that it filters your email), and keep the data file up to date. Remember, Norton software now does all that automatically, so if you have to make a choice, we recommend Norton. And we don’t get a referral bonus, by the way. :-) By the way, if you can’t afford virus software for the moment, but you have free or very cheap Internet access, one participant (Thanks Sherri!) recommended the following two sites, which perform virus checking interactively, at no cost to the user: http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp (We have not personally verified those sites.)

MEDICAL TRAINING FOR MISSIONARIES

graduation cap Elim Bible Institute will soon begin a two year program to train “International Health Technicians” (classes beginning September 2001). Apparently there was some confusion about the item published previously “MEDICAL TRAINING FOR MISSIONARIES“. Contrary to what might have been implied, there is no prior medical training necessary! Open your own health clinic or work alongside a doctor. Diagnose and treat diseases specializing in “Tropical and Third World Medicine”, learn to deliver babies, give injections and do minor surgery. Includes Emergency Medical Technician Certification. Health care is the key to many locked doors around the world! This Certificate Program consists of one year of “Missions and Cross Cultural Studies” and one year of intensive medical training by an Experienced Faculty of Medical Specialists. Transfers are accepted for the first year from approved Bible Schools or training programs. International students are welcome! Seats will be limited. Call today for more information. GODSMISSION.COMMUNITY

Someone must have seen our item in Brigada Today, ‘NOT MUCH HYPE ABOUT “GODSMISSION.COMMUNITY'”. This past week, we received information on this very event, billed as “North America’s most comprehensive gathering of mission leaders in recent years”. It’s slated for September 20 – 23 in Orlando, Florida to discover new pathways for collaborative global ministries. Forums will cover a wide variety of topics including partnership, church mobilization, creative missions options, personal evangelism and technological collaboration. Discussions and presentations will be augmented with worship, corporate prayer and time to network throughout the weekend. While participants are drawn primarily form the sponsoring networks of mission leaders, others are welcome as space allows. PERSPECTIVES MOVEMENT HOLDS NATIONAL FIELD COUNCIL

calendar “Perspectives on the World Christian Movement” has been experiencing dynamic growth with over 100 classes being offered this Fall across the U.S. and Canada. Over one hundred North American Perspectives coordinators, as well as two delegates from Korea, gathered in Denver this July for the triennial Perspectives National Field Council to help shape the movement for the 21st century. The Perspectives course was originally developed by Dr. Ralph Winter (U.S. Center for World Mission), in response to a marked increase in commitment cards turned in at the close of Urbana, 1973. Though the original intent was to provide training for college students headed to the mission field, the course also mobilizes lay people by “equipping the people of God for strategic participation in His plan to reach all peoples, tongues, tribes, and nations.” Council participants reported that more and more mission agencies’ candidates have been influenced by the Perspectives course, and Churches are taking more pro-active roles in sending, praying, or in adopting people groups, as a result of hosting the course.

Scott White, chairman of the Perspectives Executive Coordinators’ Council, noted, “Hearing reports from around the nation about the impact and growth of Perspectives was inspirational and left all with great expectations for the future of the movement.” Council participants addressed topics such as repackaging Perspectives material for children and gen-Xers, encouraging alumni for ongoing involvement, recapturing the course emphasis on passion for the Lord and his purposes, and harnessing the power of the web as a tool for mobilization. David Byrant (Concerts of Prayer International), Carol Davis (Global Spectrum), Steve Hawthorne (Waymakers), and Ralph Winter addressed the gathering, challenging participants to renew their vision both for the glory of God and for mobilizing lay people to use their gifts strategically to reach the unreached. Messages and workshops may be accessed on-line at http://www.GodsPerspective.org and clicking on Perspectives Field Council.

NOT MUCH HYPE ABOUT “GODSMISSION.COMMUNITY”

calendar I would have thought we’d be hearing lots about the big-time gathering that the Billy Graham Center is hosting in Orlando, Sept. 20-23. Supposedly, some 1500 leaders (80% of the leadership of the missionary force in North America) are headed there… including those gathering for the EFMA and the IFMA conventions. But instead, at least from where we’ve been sitting, there has been a pretty strange silence. Speakers include Tom Houston and others. Other groups like ACMC, Willow Creek Int’l, WEF, and Intent are rallying there too. To learn more, click to: http://www.godsmission.com or email gmcatwheatondotedu  (gmcatwheatondotedu)  .

WE GET MAIL: HOW DO YOU SAY “FORMER SOVIET UNION”

Whoa… We got a lot of email expressing opinions on the “former Soviet Union” issue. TAKEN TO TASK OVER THE TERM, “FORMER SOVIET UNION”.) The opinions came in all over the board but the general consensus was . . . it’s not an easy task to describe such a complex world! In the end, it seems the consensus is… we have to use several terms. No one term adequately describes the vast mosaic that used to be the USSR. Several Brigada Today participants wrote from within ___ (whatever you want to call it :-) ) to say that they totally understand and that “former Soviet Union” is an understandable compromise (though probably still a compromise). Others urged switching to several terms — like Central Europe, Eastern Europe, Central Asia, etc. “Russian Speaking Republics” wasn’t at all very popular, for obvious reasons. (Some are trying to lose that language.) So… it’s a naming jungle out there! For those who need to go in print with descriptive terms, we encourage you to be sensitive… and for those reading the terms, we urge you to extend grace! It’s not an easy task.

MAIL FOR YOUR CONTACTS

letter and ligntening bolt The folks at SOON Gospel Literature produce an evangelistic easy-English paper and an associated evangelistic Bible correspondence course. They are mailing the free paper worldwide to about 100,000 contacts at any one time, using the help of 1000 volunteer mailing groups throughout UK. There is currently spare capacity to send the paper to additional addresses, and SOON’s team is happy to take referral addresses from any organization such as a radio ministry as an add-on to their own follow-up. SOON is particularly appropriate for Africa and Asia, as well as any TEFL situation. To see online samples of the paper, go to:
http://www.brigada.org/today/articles/olympic.html

To discuss the handling of addresses, email: tonyatsoondotorgdotuk  (tonyatsoondotorgdotuk)  . Free copies of the paper in easy-English, French, Swahili and African Portuguese are also available to any Christian group to use for local distribution.

Also, in an effort to make these resources more accessible they have reduced the price of these presentations by 25% across the board and now you can order all of their resources at their new website at: http://createinternational.com/VideoWebPage.html or http://createinternational.com/ev.html.

In addition to their video resources, Create International also produces PhotoCD-ROM disks. FIND CONTEXTUALIZED RESOURCES

WebWatch “Indigitech”, is a new website developed by Create International for both education and dissemination of contextual evangelistic resources. It is their desire that Indigitech become a bridge between fieldworkers and contextual resources which are now available. It includes many links to video, audio, tract, and webevangelism resources as well as offering free downloadable materials. Please make use of this vital Internet tool at: http://createinternational.com/indigitech/.
--------------------------------------

SIRCAM TROJAN “WORM” (VIRUS) SEEMS RAMPANT IN CHRISTIAN CIRCLES

virus The “Sircam worm (kind of like a virus)” seems rampant in Christian circles. I’m not sure why, particularly, except for the fact that maybe we’re more trusting of people we know… and since the trojan contains its own SMTP engine and automatically composes emails to the user’s address book entries, it seems that friends are the biggest victims of the Sircam “worm”. For some reason, McAffee antivirus software seems a bit less effective at handling it. Not sure why. Either way, there’s more information at: href="http://wwwdotsarcdotcom/avcenter/venc/data/w32dotsircamdotwormatmmdothtml">http://wwwdotsarcdotcom/avcenter/venc/data/w32dotsircamdotwormatmmdothtml

Notice that if you can’t afford Norton Antivirus 2001 (which is very effective against this and most other viruses), there are instructions at the site above on how to remove the virus manually. There are also instructions on how to recognize it.

Want to make your PC less vulnerable to attacks from these kinds of viruses or worms? Unhook the Visual Basic script tool. Most individuals probably don’t need it anyway. Just open My Computer, then open Control Panel, then open Add/Remove Programs. Then click on the “Windows Setup” tab. This gets you to Windows features that you can either add or remove. Highlight “Accessories”, then click on the Details button. Scroll down the list of features, uncheck “Windows Scripting Host” Click OK to save changes, and close out each dialogue window. With Windows Scripting Host uninstalled, those silly “Trojan horse virus programs” won’t be able to run Visual Basic Scripts.

They’re rampant… so be careful… It truly is a jungle out there!

--------------------------------------

SEE THOSE FONTS ON YOUR PC

Have you noticed how your PC slows down as you add zillions of fonts (some of which you never use anyway?). Get this free viewing utility, then weed out the ones you don’t use. “FontViewer 2” scans the files on your hard drive then tells you which fonts you actually use. Pretty handy! It then highlights the files you don’t use, allowing you to remove them . . . at least for the time being. It runs under Win 95, 98, ME, NT 4.0 or 2000. Just head on over to: http://www.pcmag.com/utilities to get your copy… for free! Tell ’em Brigada sent you! :-)

WHAT’S THE BEST PATH TO AN INDIGENOUS CHURCH?

Is it your goal to start a church that can stand on its own? How do you get there? Beginning next week, we hope to do a series of “BackPage” editorials on the best path to developing a church that can stand on its own, i.e., become indigenous. Send your best ideas to DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg  (DLucasatTeamExpansiondotorg)   and please make the subject read, simply, “STAND”. We’ll publish a series of quick reports here… then make a compilation report available as an auto-responder. Thanks in advance!!! (Please be sure to make the subject line, “STAND”. It’s the only way we can be sure that all the great contributions will be included! Thanks!)

LIBRARIES AS A MODEL FOR EVANGELISM

They’ll prepare a report for us to post here in Brigada Today in a couple of weeks.

The persecution of Christians has occurred at least three times in Japan’s history. Some Japanese Christian leaders see recent developments in the country as an indication that it could happen again. Therefore they are asking fellow believers around the world to join with them in praying for the leaders of Japan in An Evening of Prayer for the Nation on August 14, 2001. For details, see http://www.japanccc.org/english/pray/pevents.html or write to Kevin with Japan Campus Crusade for Christ at: jcccprayatd2dotdiondotnedotjp  (jcccprayatd2dotdiondotnedotjp)  .

TAKEN TO TASK OVER THE TERM, “FORMER SOVIET UNION”

Last week, after including an item that used the phrase, “former Soviet Union”, I was taken to task by someone …. a Russian now living in Minnesota… who didn’t want to be known as a former anything, let alone a former Soviet. So… I guess we should consider a new term — maybe “Eastern block” or “Russian-speaking world” or … even… Central & Eastern Europe. The brother asked… “How long does it take to change perspectives?” I guess… longer than 20 or 30 years, apparently, because “former Soviet Union” seems to have stuck so far! Still, our own mission is in the process of making the change and maybe yours should too!

ICTA AT WORK

ICTA logo Wherever you see something new, high tech, and missions oriented, it won’t be long before you learn that “ICTA”, headed up by Pete Holzmann, had some kind of input. Sure enough, they’re heavily involved in making inputs into the Joshua Project II operation. Dan Scribner wrote, ” ICTA has provided office space, office expenses and support assistance to the Joshua Project II effort for which we are most grateful.” Thanks Pete and the ICTA crew! MISSIONARY DE-BRIEFING QUESTIONNAIRE FOR CHURCHES

Former missionary Walter Sanchez has designed a questionnaire that home churches can use to interview and evaluate their missionaries when they return home. It is a useful tool to determine what type of care the missionary might need right away, and if further ministry should be recommended or delayed. What’s more… for the Brigada family, he’s agreed to make it available for free! To get your own peek at it, click on over to: http://www.geocities.com/capitolhill/5645 And by the way, Walter has agreed in advance to let you adapt it for your own use. (Thanks Walter and crew!)

He’s agreed to compile a full report for Brigada participants when he has compiled the input. (Thanks David!)

COST-SAVER… COSTCO

When I was in Taiwan last January, our missionary team kept talking about how much they were appreciating CostCo. I didn’t know the whole of it. Apparently it has opened up an entirely new conduit for certain previously-unavailable items. Those in the UK, USA, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and Korea have probably come to agree with those in Taiwan — it’s a great source for great stuff… and sometimes the price can be incredibly low. Twice this past week, their prices were literally half of the next-best local supplier (like Staples and Walmart). If you don’t happen to have one in your back yard, check their web store at: http://www.costco.com. You’ll be glad you did! (And guess what… no referral fees on that one! Just “one beggar telling another beggar where to find bread!” :-) )
--------------------------------------

HAVE YOU SEARCHED AT OINGO?

If you’re ever looking for conceptual topics, you should. Oingo relies on “an extensive ontology of millions of words, meanings, and their conceptual relationships to other meanings in a semantic network that is constantly changing to reflect the currency of everyday language. Once a query is submitted, their interpretive algorithm parses it and the output is filtered to derive the optimal result.” Okay … I can listen to all that… but all I know is that if I put in the word “futbol”, I get sites from all over the globe, many of which don’t even mention the term that I filled into the blank . . . because Oingo not only searches for what I said, it searches for what I meant to say. Try it… you’ll like it!

INTERNET CHAIN LETTERS ARE A WASTE OF TIME

Check out Brigada’s “OPC Protocol” by sending a blank email to opcatbrigadadotorg  (opcatbrigadadotorg)  . You’ll learn to look for tell-tale signs of fake tales… and you’ll learn 3 ingredients to watch for before you forward… a “verifiable origin, purpose and closure.” And for even more on the subject, check out all the sites listed as resources at the end of the OPC email you’ll get back in your inbox. (Those sites have been updated as of July 8, 2001.) Good luck… and enjoy the new bandwidth you’ll help us all retain! :-)

Their purpose is “highlighting least reached peoples through information sharing and networking.” Be ready for their website at: http://www.joshuaproject.net.

Missionprep is not about lectures — its an adult based interactive model of training. During the next few months, they’ll do a 2 Week Language Acquisition course (17- 29 June & 14 – 26 October) and a 2 Week Cross-Cultural Training (3- 18 July). DO CHRISTIANS MANUFACTURE ANY PRODUCTS?

Where are the everyday products used by the rest of the business world — and consumers — but made or marketed by people who serve Jesus with a heart for evangelism? Matthew sells industrial components and is looking for an Internet meeting place for Christians involved in the business world, particularly manufacturing. Please send site suggestions, including non-English language sites, to infoatoempartsdotnet  (infoatoempartsdotnet)  . He promises to check out each site, see if is relevant to real world businesses, and report his findings to Brigada. (And he promises to bring grief to anyone using his e-mail address to try and get him into a multi-level marketing scheme. :-) )

not symbolPLEASE DON’T SUBSCRIBE US TO YOUR LIST — It’s always better to ask before manually force-adding anyone to your list-serve or mailing list. Recently, tons of well-meaning people have been subscribing Doug to their lists. Since he often travels overseas, he doesn’t join many of those, for obvious reasons (like being charged big-time for overseas access). So as a general rule, please don’t bulk-mail us! See the note above if you’d like to submit items for Brigada Today. Thanks for understanding. Bottom line: We will never create Brigada Today items from bulk mail. Bulk mail gets deleted immediately — sorry. Nothing personal. We suggest you apply the same standard to everyone. Ask first!

OPCWARNING ABOUT FORWARDING EMAILS — Please, before forwarding any kind of request (even if it says “please send this to all your friends”), please check to make sure it has a VERIFIABLE ORIGIN, a VERIFIABLE PURPOSE, and a VERIFIABLE CLOSURE (OPC). By following this simple approach, many “email viruses” could be nipped in the bud… at least in the Brigada family. More information about the full Brigada OPC protocol is available. Thank you.

NEW EMAIL JOURNALS… TCKS, TENTMAKERS, RESEARCHING

NATIVE LANGUAGE TOOLS

tools Logos wants missionaries around the world to have native language tools. They also want the countries that are not so commercially viable to be able to get Bible software for their native languages. They are trying to release their next version of Bible Software in as many foreign languages as possible. They have an online collaborative effort set up where people who are fluent in multiple languages can help be a part of the process. http://www.logos.com/titus/language/ So far we have 33 languages in the works! Since most of these languages don’t have any commercial market at all, we need all the help we can get in order to release our Bible Software in as many languages as possible for no extra charge.

You can see the status of our translation work live on the web at: http://www.logos.com/titus/language/status.asp

People who know the languages can contribute translation help at: http://www.logos.com/titus/language/
