Urbana

12) The BackPage: A Penny for Your Thoughts about Urbana —

When I was just getting started, I (like everyone else?) attended an Urbana Missions Conference (1984, if I recall). We had been involved in missions for 2 years and I had heard all about Urbana and was hungry to go. About 2 weeks before the event, I strained my back big-time. Pulled it totally out of place. But wild horses couldn’t have kept me from attending. My wife drove and I laid flat on my back the whole trip there. And I didn’t regret it.

For this week’s “BackPage Editorial” would you mind sharing a synopsis of your favorite Urbana story? Some have said that this one conference has done as much as anything else to ignite a new generation of worldwide witnesses If that’s the case, there should be some great stories out there. Was it there that you came to decide for sure that missions was going to be your ‘thing?’ Did you meet your future spouse there? Do you have a story about not having the money to go… then suddenly at the last minute, the provision came through, but only after you prayed & fasted? Are you a former *speaker* at Urbana? Tell us what it’s like standing on the platform, looking into the eager eyes of 18,000 students hungering to change the world? Let’s sort it out and get ready for Urbana 12. Just click on the “Comment” box below to share your story, anonymously or otherwise. Learn more about Urbana at…

  1. MORE ON THE NEW “GLOBAL STATUS OF EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANITY” MAP — The World Missions Atlas Project (WorldMAP) and its partners in cooperation with the greater missions community have, with expanded and updated data and technology, completed the “Global Status of Evangelical Christianity” wall map. This map illustrates the status of evangelical Christianity and church planting based upon the CPPI (Church Planting Progress Indicators) database maintained by the Global Research Department of the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. Included on this map are three inset maps displaying the global status of Bible Translation, global status of the JESUS film translation, and global response to the film JESUS. Highlighted on the map are over 100,000 cities, towns and villages thematically color-coded to depict both their relative size and their evangelical status based upon the primary language and people group living in each location.

Please pray for the distribution of this map and its global impact for the Kingdom of God. The “Global Status of Evangelical Christianity” may be downloaded as a .jpg or .pdf and ordered from:

    http://www.worldmap.org

at a very discounted price or contact info(at)worldmap(dot)org [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .].

  2. URBANA 06: YOU HAVE A CALLING –- God has a place for you in his global plan. He has given you unique passions, skills and resources that can make a difference in his Kingdom. At Urbana 06 over 25,000 will gather to worship and hear how God is using his church to accomplish his purposes throughout the world. Will you be there? Learn about God’s love for people of every tribe, nation, and language, and how you can be a part of his global mission. Register by October 15th and save $75! We look forward to seeing you on December 27, 2006 in St. Louis! For more information, visit

  3. GOOGLE PAGE RANK (FOR EMERALD HILLS) REVISITED — Some will recall my interest in observing the Google page rank for the retreat center/campus we’re constructing for Brigada’s home base (along with Team Expansion, the mission organization with which I work). Try it out for yourself to see the latest. Please open up the Google search site at:

    http://www.google.com

Type in Emerald Hills and hit enter. By my findings, the Team Expansion Emerald Hills website now comes up as the second link out of over 5 million. Remember months and months ago when it started consistently making it in the top 100? :-) By the way, while you’re there, if you don’t mind, go ahead and “click through” the link. My theory is, by doing so, you let Google know that indeed, that link was the one for which you were searching. The import for all of us, relation to the websites we’re promoting, is that the more people use them through a search engine like Google, the more the search engine might regard them highly. By the way, while you’re there, hover your mouse over “Get Involved” then slide down and click on “Pray” and see our Prayer Coordinator’s most recent prayer entry for our Emerald Hills vision. Another theory I have is that Google pays a bit more attention to pages that stay *active*. Betty, our Prayer Coordinator, updates these prayer requests *daily*. Not only is she staying in touch with a battalion of pray-ers, she’s also raising our profile in the eyes of Google. At least… that’s my theory.

  4. ENCOUNTERING THE WORLD OF ISLAM –- This fall, Gateway Missionary Training Centre (Langley, BC, Canada) is launching a new venture in the Perspectives family of courses. They’ll be offering classes every Wednesday evening, September 13 to November 29. Class size is limited. For more information contact Bev info(at)gatewaytraining(dot)org [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .] or check the web site

    http://www.gatewaytraining.org

  5. HOSPITALITY HOMES — ServantCARE offers hospitality homes to those in ministry. They will be traveling in September and October to Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. They would like your help in connecting them with those who have the gift of hospitality who would like to serve in this manner. All information needed and questions answered is found on their website at

    http://www.servantcare.com/

under “Hospitality Homes”. They also have posted on their website 30 pages of “Referral Links”, many of them supplied by Brigada, to which they would like to add any other ministries across the country that meet the needs of those in ministry. Contact ServantCARE at icare(at)servantcare(dot)com

  6. WORKING WITH CHILDREN IN CRISIS –- This week of training helps to prepare those who will be working with children facing critical needs. It is based on the training developed by Phyllis Kilbourn, author of various books on the subject and founder of Rainbows of Hope. Trainers for the workshop will be Trudy Agawin, DIrector of Gateway Missionary Training Centre and Adrienned Pilkey, ROH representative. Both have had experience in working with traumatized children. Course will be held at Gateway MTC, Langley BC, September 25 -29. For more information contact Bev info(at)gatewaytraining(dot)org or check the web site

    http://www.gatewaytraining.org

  7. THANKS TO THOSE WHO HELP UNDERGIRD BRIGADA — One anonymous giver this past week sent $11.25. Maybe you might think, “What will $11.25 matter?” Believe me… with Brigada, it matters a great deal! To make your gift that counts, just visit:

    http://www.brigada.org

and click on “sponsor” in the top menu (to use PayPal or a credit card), or if you prefer, send a check payable to Team Expansion to: Team Expansion (Brigada secretary), 13711 Willow Reed Dr., Louisville, KY 40299. As always, be sure to let us know if you’d like us to promote any particular service or ministry, or if you’d prefer your gift be anonymous. In any case, thanks for considering Brigada in your estate giving, your monthly church missions fund, and/or your own personal giving for this calendar year.

  8. MICROSOFT OFFICE TO OFFER “SAVE AS PDF” FEATURE — You’ve probably already heard the news . . . that Microsoft will be delivering a “save as pdf” option for use with Office 2007. See the full press release by browsing to:

    http://news.com

then in the search blank, type in “save as pdf”. With that release, users should no longer need to buy Adobe Acrobat or PDF995. I’ve found the PDF format to be a *very* useful feature, especially since it allows several different choices of security settings, including “don’t allow text or graphics to be copied out of this document”.

  9. FRIENDS AND FAMILY DISCOUNT, AIRLINE STYLE — MTS travel is promoting a “friends-and-family-type” discount. You apparently list with them the routes you’re hoping to find (like, “My son is a Christian worker in Senegal; would you alert me when fares to Dakar go on sale?”). Learn more at:

http://www.mtstravel.com/familyfriendsandpartners/ (Thanks to Emily for letting us know about this one.)

  10. THE BACK PAGE: THE CORE, THE COMMITTED, OR THE CROWD? — Thanks to Brian for his recent referral to the Keith Green article at:

    http://www.lastdaysministries.org/nations/whyyoushouldgo.html

Brian went on to tie this article to the Rick Warren summary of the typical make-up of a typical church: The Core The Committed and The Crowd

Brian’s point was . . . maybe the number of consecrated pray-ers will *always* be a bit less than the whole membership (maybe a *lot* less), because the *real* pray-ers will perhaps grow out of the *core* segment of the local church. That *core* will always be a subset of the committed, not to mention a scant sliver of the crowd.

So maybe the key isn’t to start with numbers. Brian’s right. Maybe we start with a handful of motivated co-workers who will stop at nothing until they accomplish the mission.

That helps me a lot. It tells me we don’t have to worry about masses. We just have to focus on doing the right stuff with a few of the right people… and God will make things happen.

  1. RETREATS FOR PROSPECTIVE MISSIONARIES — “The Journey Deepens” is a weekend retreat to help prospects explore what it is like to be a missionary, discover whether a missionary or sender role is God’s fit, and connect with mission agencies. These retreats are for college students, young professionals in their 20s and 30s, adults in their 40s and 50s, and high school seniors willing to explore becoming a missionary. Each retreat of 50 participants and 10 missionary mentors from multiple agencies is highly relational with extended worship, small group discussions, personal reflection and much prayer. Discussions include agencies guidance, finances, singles/families, etc. For those in south central USA a 2006 retreat will be Sep 29-Oct 1 in Davis, Oklahoma (between Dallas and Oklahoma City). For those in southeast USA a 2006 retreat will be Oct 20-22 in Atlanta, Georgia. Agencies may apply to send a mentor/recruiter as well as receive a free sponsored link on every webpage of The Journey Deepens web resources in exchange for reciprocal promotion. These retreats are presented by MissionsFocus Int’l and co-sponsored by ACMC, Caleb Project, Perspectives and the U.S. Center for World Mission. For more visit

    http://www.TheJourneyDeepens.com/retreats.asp

  2. WIKITRAVEL IS A GREAT RESOURCE — Have you been there? Check out this resource, whose goal is a “free, complete, up-to-date and reliable guide” to worldwide travel:

    http://wikitravel.org

Yes, I recognize several of the pages are empty… and that, of those which are filled in, many are filled in by informal fellow-travelers. But just the same, my hunch is that this project will grow and grow . . . so let’s help make it happen in a healthy way.

  3. URBANA 06: YOU HAVE A CALLING — God has a place for you in his global plan. Organizers look forward to seeing you on December 27, 2006 in St. Louis! For more information, visit

    http://www.urbana.org

You may also reach them by emailing info(at)urbana.Org [As a means of preventing spam for our contributors, in the preceding email address(es), please replace (at) with @ and (dot) with .] or calling 608-274-7995.

  4. “GREAT COMMISSION KIDS” PUBLICATION — GC Kids is a quarterly six- page publication for children ages 9 to 13 who have an interest in missions. It aims to encourage these children to become missionaries. GC Kids may also be used by children’s workers to educate children about missions. It is sent by postal mail. Multiple copies are easy and inexpensive to obtain. For a sample copy as a PDF file by email or to get samples by postal mail, send your request to elinor(dot)young(at)worldteam(dot)org. To subscribe to GC Kids, email leahy(dot)ken(at)comcast(dot)net, and put “subscribe GCK” in the subject line.

  5. PRAYER REQUEST FOR ARABIAN PENINSULA — Mert is a brother asking us to pray for Arabs: “Pray that the power system of Wahhabi leaders would crumble and that the people of Saudi Arabia would not feel controlled by these leaders. Pray that God would break down the stronghold of pride that binds Saudis to Islam.” He goes on to tell this story: “Salman is an Arab Muslim who began following Jesus along with his wife, just before she died of cancer about 16 months ago. Being with his mom in the hospital these past few days reopened the shallow wounds of his wife’s death. He has not grieved properly for either. He is a young single dad with tremendous responsibility and no time to stop and grieve. Pray that God would touch Salman’s heart deeply this week with comfort and peace. Pray too for his boys, aged 13 and 9, that God would heal their hurting hearts as well.

“One of our workers learned tonight that local tradition mandates returning to the burial site on the third day after the death to make prayers for the deceased. Salman said he hated this tradition, because he said it just reopens the hurt. Could this be because there is no hope of resurrection for most Muslims who are buried in that cemetery! Pray for wisdom as several men and women in the country are involved in his life.”

  6. NEED HELP WRITING YOUR BOOK? — There’s a book inside you, and if you need help writing it, a new e-book, called “How to Write a Book,” can help. In seven easy-to-follow steps, writer’s coach Diana Scimone shares practical insights that will help you move your book from dream to reality. Her encouraging and motivational teaching style can help you finally write the book you’ve always dreamed of writing. Cost for the e-book is $14.95, and you can download it (as a pdf) at

    http://www.peapodpublishing.com

  7. STRATEGY CO-ORDINATOR (SC) TRAINING — Sign up for this training from 07 to 31 August 2006 with Asia Pacific Mission Limited (APM) in partnership with the Singapore Centre for Evangelism and Missions (SCEM). Learn the work of a Strategy Coordinator (SC) to focus on developing Church-planting Movements (CPM) among Unreached People Groups (UPG), Cities or Regions. It’s happening at the Global Training Centre, Singapore for US$600.00 per single person or married couple (plus your airfare, board and lodging). Sign up before 15 July, 2006 or you’ll pay a $50 late fee. For more info, write scanet(at)gmail(dot)com with subject: SCT06 or contact Frank (Mobile: +65-9682-4493; Fax: +65-625-777-29)

  8. HOW CAN WE SAY THANKS ENOUGH? — Hats off this week to the kind- hearted individuals who gave $25 and $10 respectively to empower Brigada to keep pumping out missions resources to your screen. Thanks, too, to Insurance Services of America for their gift of $30. The really cool part about this ISA gift is that it was based on two different short-term teams having purchased trip insurance for their journeys. One group, from Fairbanks, Alaska, had gone to the Philippines… and another, from Joplin, MO, had traveled to Jamaica. Because they used ISA and this link:

    http://www.missionaryhealth.net/brigada.htm

they received a great deal on their trip insurance while helping Brigada too! (Thanks Carla and Lyle, for choosing ISA!)

This past week, we were also humbled by the generosity of Covenant College and, in particular, its Chalmers Institute

    http://www.chalmers.org

We were floored when they sent a $600 gift for Brigada. I’m telling you… if we had our way, we’d ask all 10,000 Brigada subscribers to register for “Foundations and Principles of Holistic Ministry”, offered in distance format on August 28 – September 22, 2006. But even if only 100 of us decide to check out a course at the link above, I’d be thrilled!

Finally, Blessed Hope sent $16.45, based on long distance use by those who had signed up at this link:

    http://www.lowermyphonebill.com/brigada

Once again, if you’re looking for long distance service anyway, you’ll get a great deal while helping Brigada if you travel to that link and switch your long distance to Blessed Hope. Thanks in advance!

  9. GCOMM REGISTRATION DEADLINE COMING JUNE 15 — The second Global Consultation on Music and Missions (GCoMM 2006), a worldwide gathering of hundreds of musicians, music missionaries, educators, worship pastors, and Christian leaders, will be held July 11-15 at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Exhibitor information is now available at

    http://www.gcommhome.org

as well as speaker information and a convenient online registration. The regular rates for North America attendees (as well as highly discounted student and overseas registration rates) are available only until June 15. After this date, late and walk-in registration rates will be available for an additional cost.

  10. KEEP BRIGADA COMING TO YOUR SCREEN: CHIP IN? — When you empower Brigada, you keep Brigada Today editions cranking out each week to people all over the world who perhaps can not, at this time, pay a subscription fee. We keep sending them Brigada Today on a weekly basis — and you have the opportunity to make that possible for them. Just click on “sponsor” in the top menu (to use PayPal or a credit card), or if you prefer, send a check payable to Team Expansion to: Team Expansion (Brigada secretary), 13711 Willow Reed Dr., Louisville, KY 40299. As always, be sure to let us know if you’d like us to promote any particular service or ministry, or if you’d prefer your gift be anonymous. In any case, thanks for considering Brigada in your estate giving, your monthly church missions fund, and/or your own personal giving for this calendar year.

  11. THE BACKPAGE: “24” FINALE — Previously on “24” (in our BackPage Editorials), we’ve discussed courage, patient wisdom, speaking the truth, freedom, accountability, a sense of urgency, and private pain. In this “season finale”… the final episode in our series of metaphors with “24”, let’s consider what happens when Miles erases the tape… or when the witness dies. Let’s talk about what Jack does when the bottom falls out of his world.

If you’ve seen “24”, you know that Jack isn’t perfect. Many of us probably squirmed as he sat on that hospital bed, talking to Audrey, while Miles snuck in and erased the tape that would have served as evidence against President Logan. (If you haven’t been watching “24”, all you have to do is realize that, basically, Jack dropped his guard because he assumed everything was good.) I think one of the most encouraging lessons I’ve drawn from my analysis of the character of Jack Bauer is that, although he does express some disappointment, and, at times, even anger over a setback, he seems to immediately go back into fighting mode. In short — he never gives up. Bad guys get away. People he loves get kidnapped or killed. Witnesses vanish. Enemies resurface. And, at least on a couple of occasions, he’s even essentially been killed – then revived. (Someone joked that the only time we’ve ever seen him rest was during those moments when he was dead!) But regardless of the extent or nature of the setback, he just shifts into the next gear, trying to design a contingency plan. And, because it’s TV, most of the time, something eventually works in one form or another.

I take a lot of encouragement from that model. I’m involved in several very difficult and trying negotiations at present. Some of them seem, at times, even overwhelming. When I begin to feel that cold wave of discouragement sweeping over me, I pray to the Father, take comfort in the fact that He is with me, and yes… I’ll admit it… I have even succumbed to the line of thought… “Jack wouldn’t quit.” Now I’m not suggesting we sell wristbands reading, “What would Jack Do?” :-) But just as Jesus drew parables from nature, I’m drawing parables from today’s world — and this parable of “24” has meaning to me . . . and I hope and trust it will to some of you as well. Missions is very hard work. Stephen Neill said that mission work is so hard, it’s a wonder anyone should have ever even attempted it. Whoa. Conclusion: when life is tough, remember — don’t quit just because someone erases your evidence tape. :-)

So, with that we close our series on “24.” Besides… Jack’s on a slow boat to China and we have some time to ponder season 6 anyway. So… until next time, please take heart — and don’t give up. Even if the battle costs you your very life. Keep fighting. Never give in. Jack doesn’t.

  2. OSCAR HOSTS 1000 AT VIRTUAL PARTY — On 1st March 2006, OSCAR, the web-based UK Information Service for World Mission, relaunched it’s website with a virtual party on the Internet.

“We wanted an event that would potentially involve everyone who uses the OSCAR website, wherever they are,” says Mike Frith, OSCAR’s Founding Director. The re-launch also coincided with the organisation’s sixth birthday. Within the first few days of March 1st, the website was achieving over 1000 unique users per day and on the first day over 15,000 page views were reported. Mike continues “With our new website we are seeking to build an online community of people involved or interested in world mission. We want it to provide an interface for all those who wish to engage with the world for Christ’s sake, whether they are working overseas, supporting from home or just surfing for inspiration.”

Party goers are able to play virtual hide & seek, virtual pass the parcel, and mingle with other virtual party goers during activities and discussions. Everyone is invited to join in the party which continues until the end of March at http://www.oscar.org.uk (Oscar has also pitched in $50 this past week toward Brigada’s 2006 expenses. Please support this new Brigada sponsor . . . and to the folks at Oscar, we say “Thanks!!!”)

  4. GGING ABOUT 21ST CENTURY MISSIONS — Urbana.org has just launched a new blog called Missional Hands designed to interview personnel staff from various mission agencies about one question – What is the most important skill to be a missionary in the 21st Century? Jon Hirst, Director of Communications for HCJB World Radio is writing the blog and is providing interaction for those students looking for more input on these key questions. This is a great resource for people considering missions as it asks the hard questions and tries to provide straightforward answers. Visit: http://www.urbana.org/blogs/blog.main.hands.cfm

  5. MISSIONARY TRAINING CAMP — With many requests for additional training, Elijah Company has scheduled an additional orientation from May 18-21, 2006. The four days provide steps, stamina and stature for missions. See http://www.elijahcompany.org for a description of the training and comments made by past participants. For additional information write to elijah(at)elijahcompany(dot)org. Or call with any questions to 757- 226-3507.

  6. CORRECTION ON PASTORS RETREAT NETWORK — Sorry that the Pastors Retreat Network isn’t in the position to invite missionaries after all. However, you could pass the word to your local church ministry staff. (Feb. 17th Brigada Today, Item #8, “NEED A GETAWAY?”) (To all those who might have checked with them, please pardon any inconvenience. They were recommended to us for that purpose.) However, Chad went beyond the call of duty and scoped out a dozen other locations that *do* take missionaries, some free, some for a charge. Click here to see the list of missionary retreat locations. (Thanks Chad!)

  7. 25 FREE SECURE EMAIL ACCOUNTS FOR YOUR ORGANIZATION — That’s right. Strategic Kingdom Building Ministries (SKBM) desires to offer the subscribers of Brigada Today, especially brothers and sisters in the field, free Secure E-Mail Accounts. This offer is limited to 25 accounts per ministry or organization. Because this is a public web site, they request an application of need be filled out by your organization’s leader. And because these accounts are secure, they ask also that the organization leader act as the point of contact to validate each account. The organization leader should provide the required information in accordance with the application format below.

For further information and to set up the accounts, please contact Troy Fournier at troy_fournier(at)yahoo(dot)com. Just send Troy your organization’s name, mission, purpose of the accounts, website, full contact info, along with the Last name, first name, middle initial, and current e-mail address of all members requiring an account.

  8. WEB OUTREACH FOCUS DAY ON 7 MAY — The Internet Evangelism Day website is at http://www.InternetEvangelismDay.com. The IE Day website contains many resources to help Christians understand and use the Internet to touch the world. It explains how to build a church website that can reach out into the community, or start an evangelistic blog. There is even a free evangelistic screensaver to download.

The site also offers materials for a mission team, training institution or church to easily stage a ‘web awareness’ focus program on 7 May (or at any time they choose). These include a PowerPoint presentation, video clips, music, drama skits, posters, discussion papers, handouts and many other ideas. (Thanks Tony!)

  14. LET THE PEOPLE PRAY: THE HERERO PEOPLE — Almost 4 years ago, God called a young man to Namibia to begin researching the unengaged peoples of this country. Would there be any people groups who had not heard the Gospel message? Yes! During his 2-year assignment, God brought across his path those from the Herero, Mbalantu, Nama/Damara and Namibian Coloured people groups. They had little or no evangelical presence among them. You have been faithfully praying that these Forgotten Peoples will have the opportunity to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ. There continues to be many barriers for evangelical work in Namibia. Pray that the Lord will send workers into His harvest field! Pray that God will raise up Namibian men and women who have a passion to share Christ. Continually lift up the Herero, an unengaged people, before the Lord. Encourage others to adopt the Herero people for prayer by visiting http://www.forgottenpeoples.info or email sf_swac(at)altonet(dot)co(dot)za

  17. THE BACKPAGE: SPEAKING INTO THE LIFE OF A PEER OR BOSS — Ever hear the term “whistleblower?” The term is usually used to describe a worker who turns in the boss or a whole company for something unethical or incompatible with principles of honesty, fairness, or other company values. How can you avoid the stigma (or the pink slip) handed to a whistleblower, while still speaking into the life of a boss or company? First, work to become a supportive insider rather than a fence-sitting cynic. Sometimes, whistleblowers are already alienated long before they get publicity for “turning someone in.” Let’s face it: those who have built up a relationship of trust can usually communicate one-on-one. They don’t have to resort to confrontational “stunts” to get their point across. (*Usually* — there are exceptions.)

Second, remember that sometimes there are circumstances beyond the control of the boss or company… “Walk a mile in their moccasins” before you become a cynic. In other words, suppose you decide to confront your boss on the company’s lack of follow-through on a policy to recruit customer support personnel, only to find that the company has worked its tail off trying to *find* customer service personnel of the quality they are seeking. What we mean is — sometimes it’s easy to critique your boss or your team from your vantage point. Only as a trusted insider will you truly understand the long-term desires of your leadership.

Third, try to figure out how you can become a part of the solution, rather than a part of the whistle. If your team is short on finances, ask if you can take a portion of your work-week to take a class on support-raising, with a view to helping shore up needed finances. If you feel your church is losing people out the “back door”, volunteer to take a few hours/week to visit new converts in an attempt to supplement the training they’re getting. You get the idea. Think like an insider… Don’t view yourself as a “victim”. You’re not stuck. Think as a belonger. Ask, “What problem is my boss facing and how can I become a part of the solution to his problem, so it will in turn help me do my job better too?”

What if things go south? What if your best efforts are misunderstood? How do you handle it if your motives are misjudged? Tune in next week for the final “BackPage” in this series.
