News and Notes about Brigada, Your Gateway to Missions Networking!
[Pass this issue to a friend! To subscribe, see instructions at end.]
In this issue....

CHECK OUT THE BRIGADA "FAMILY"
When you join the "top level" of the
Brigada family of networks (the one that sends you this weekly update,
Brigada Today), you're just seeing the tip of the iceberg! Under this
umbrella, dozens of interdependent discussions are ongoing! In some cases,
they're resolving issues such as language learning or missions mobilization,
sometimes in particular regions. In other cases, they're talking about
trying to reach a particular people group or a specific family of peoples.
Still others serve as voices for particular teams serving in different
locations around the world. The list goes on. To get a full list of all
the discussions in the Brigada family, send email to
hub@xc.org with just
one word in the text of the message body:
conferences
In just a few minutes, you'll receive a reply to your email, consisting of a
list of conferences. Skim down to the ones that begin with, "Brigada-..."
and you'll see the selection. To join any of the conferences, just send
another message to
hub@xc.org with this one line, where <conference> is the
full name of the Brigada conference you'd like to join:
subscribe <conference>
That's it! It's that simple! So join in . . . and let's start talkin'!

PRESENTING . . . BRIGADA WORLDWIDE WEB'S NEW SEARCH ENGINE (PHASE I)
Today we give gallons and gallons of thanks to Bob Mayhew for burning the
midnight oil to prepare a super-fast search engine for the Brigada web
site's past issues index. To access it, click on Brigada Today at the
Brigada site
http://www.xc.org/brigada then click
on the index
highlight. Use this site to find that hard-to-remember phone number for
some resource you're trying to find. For example, you know we mentioned a
video for JP2000 sometime in the past but can't quite remember how to get
it? Just fill in the blank with JP2000 and hit submit and in seconds,
you'll get a list of all the individual text items that mentioned the term,
JP2000.
Note that this "Phase I" implementation only includes resources
since January 1, 1996 but it does point to back issues
of both Brigada Today
and Advance. Future implementations will expand the search.
Again, thanks Bob for making it easier for us all to find resources!!!

DID YOU KNOW... (FUN FACTS TO KNOW AND TELL)
I know you've been on the
edge of your teapots wondering about Chris McDermott's perplexing question,
"Why do tea leaves go to the middle of the cup when you stir the tea?" Well
the answer came from a physics teacher in Guam: "Since the tea leaves are
floating on the top of the cup of water, they must be lighter than the
water. When stirring the cup of tea the substance with heavier mass (the
water) is forced away from the center and the substance with lighter mass
(the tea leaves) are forced to the center."
Thanks Ken Bertel!

FOLLOW-UP TO "IBM TO OFFER INTERNET FOR THE WORLD"
Thanks to those who
wrote to straighten us out on the correct address to IBM's web site. David
Householder pointed out that
http://www.ibm.net gives a bit clearer
presentation of the plan and makes it easier to understand how to follow
through with subscribing. But even after getting this address correct, our
users were still having trouble figuring out exactly how to actually
subscribe. Doug Birch seemed to find the easiest way to plug into the IBM
Global Network. He suggested that we just subscribe "to Dydax, the PK
websters. You should be able to email
info@didax.com or cal 1-888-AT-DIDAX.
The blurb says they have over 600 access numbers to the IBM Global Network."
Let us know if you subscribe and like it! By the way, Doug says it's
$19.95/month. Thanks for helping us clear this one up, David and Doug!

PRE-TENTS
[If these folks are going to have their conference before
people actually go to INTENT, would they be PRE-TENTS?] "A pre-conference
meeting for all international tentmakers attending the INTENT '96 conference
will be held at 9:30 am on Friday August 2. The meeting will be in the
Continental Plaza Hotel near the Los Angeles airport (LAX). Berit Kloster,
Director of the Norwegian Tentmakers Forum and an executive committee member
of (TIE) Tentmakers International Exchange will moderate the meeting. You
all come, everybody is welcome." Thanks to Ken Smith
kosmith@halcyon.com
for the info. Write Ken if you need additional details.

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
According to the latest figures released by Dr. David
Barrett's Global Evangelization Movement, every minute 163 previously
unevangelized people hear the gospel in a form that they can
understand and 114 ... become Christians. In that same minute, 18
people are born, and six non-Christians die. This year the global
population will increase by about 91 million.

Frontline Feedback for May 1996, via Gene Brooks... Thanks, Gene!)
Global
Glimpse is compiled each week by John Hanna, Caleb Project, Littleton, CO.

HAVE YOU CAUGHT YOUR COPY OF CATCH THE WAVE?
Looking for just the
right resource book to help today's young person appreciate the globe and
its spiritual needs??? Try Catch the Wave, by Kevin Johnson (Bethany
House Publishers). "Life is more than jet-skis, frisbees, and big screen
TVs.... God is crashing in like a wave all over the planet. So how do you
Catch the Wave? By learning how to grab your place in God's plan to
change the world. And there's no better place to be than in the water with
him. Don't miss out on your chance to get wet!" Not only is this a great
book to brew planet-minded spiritual young adults, but also, it mentions
Brigada as a resource on page 137! Hand me my checkbook!

HELP HEAL AND RESTORE THE BALKANS ... OR LEAVE IT TO THE UN
Bill and
Amy Stearns want to know if you're willing to try to get involved in healing
the hurts in Bosnia. If so, want to accompany them on their "Bosnia
Scouting Trip," Oct. 21-Nov. 1, for pastors and church leaders. Their idea
is to hold joint orientation in Budapest for 30 N. Americans and 15 E.
European pastors, then to travel for 6 days into Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia.
We'll link up there with local evangelicals to see what we as the Body might
do to pray for, heal and help restore the Balkans in the name of Christ.
North Americans pay their own way plus a stipend for their E. European
counterparts. Bill says, "This is a no-frills, gutsy survey trip. World
Christian isn't a relief agency, so we don't want funding funneled through
us. The purpose is to see the harvest field potential and let leading
churches set the pace to respond through their own mission channels." If
interested, contact Bill & Amy Stearns, World Christian (719/634-5310;
e-mail 73502.3126@compuserve.com).
Sounds like the kind of thing that
could make some real grass roots differences in the lives of some real
people with real hurts. Wha'dya think?

MORE ON THE ACCUSED KUWAITI BELIEVER, HUSSEIN
If you're interested in
an update on the accused Robert Hussein, don't miss this update. As it
explains, "We are not interested in drawing undue attention to Robert
Hussein, or in making him a star out of this situation, but we ARE
interested in this case because of the precedent it may set. Though Robert
is not the first case of a Kuwaiti Muslim converting to Christianity, he is
the first to go public with his conversion and the first to have been
challenged in the religious courts (most stay in hiding or just leave the
country)." Today's update explains how to use email to send a fax directly
to the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the State of Kuwait . . . for
free! It also pulls together a summary of what's been accomplished so far
on Hussein's behalf, via internet, faxes, air mail, and more. To get the
update, send a note to
hub@xc.org with only this line in the text of the
message:
get brigada hussein.960713
In a few moments, the update will be automatically mailed back to you.

DON'T MISS THE GROWTH AT CALEB PROJECT
. . . at least at the Caleb Project web site, that is . . .
http://www.goshen.net/calebproject. Over
the last few days, they've added 27 articles on everything from language
learning to support raising, from parents to debt, from the missionary
lovelife, to tentmaking, to the missionary call. In addition, there's a
"Persecuted Church" set of pages with updates on Hussein (in Kuwait), Sudan,
China, Pakistan and more. Finally, John Hanna used Global Mapping's
software to produce a map of the "Priority 1 and 2" unreached peoples from
the JP2000 list (larger populations are shown by size and color), as well as
3 detailed maps showing where the top 100 least reached peoples live
together with their names. These maps reveal priority areas where we'll need
to focus our final efforts for least reached peoples! John challenges, "See
if you can find where the Kawar or the Takistani live! (Pray for advocates
for these peoples while you're at it!)" Thanks JHanna and Nate!
