MORE ON INTERNET PHONING
The jury's still out on Internet Phoning.
One user wrote this past week to say that, from everything he could gather,
there were many dissatisfied users out there. Bottom line: Don't expect new
technologies like Internet Phoning to be a cakewalk! If you live on the
cutting edge, sometimes you're bound to see some blood!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE
Believers in Vietnam continue to win others to Christ,
despite official opposition. In a two-week period, 135 students made
decisions for Christ after a teacher shared his faith. Over three months,
one church group reported 450 public commitments and 200 baptisms. In many
parts of Vietnam Christianity is strictly controlled.

SO NOW THAT WE CAN FAX, HOW DO WE WRITE??
Thanks to
DavidHousholder@xc.org who reminded us of Compuserve's ability to mail out
paper mail via their closest server, just as we asked last week in "How Do
We Write?" However, Ken Daniels
75754.2075@CompuServe.COM, the originator
of the question, had already tried that service and had found it to be a tad
on the pricey side of things. If you know of other options, write Ken directly.

THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE
Thanks to all those who have been praying this
week for healing from my August 6th surgery -- and to those who didn't know
because we didn't want to overdramatize the situation, I now ask prayer for
healing and quick recovery. The surgeon felt good about the operation (but,
. . . malpractice suits being what they are today, . . . Duhhh. . . what's
he gonna say!???
), and now, some 3 days after the fact, I still have
had very little pain and discomfort.
He laser-zapped and removed the noncancerous growth from my vocal chords
with no problem. For months now, it had kept me from speaking clearly,
rendering me constantly hoarse and frustrated when preaching, teaching or
even coaching soccer. I was given a mandate -- 7 days of complete vocal
rest! I can't talk for another 4 days . . (now that is pain!
), so I
feel like the Invisible Man! (Does my throat still make noise?) We won't
really know if the surgery worked until next Tuesday or Wed., when they
release me to start talking! I start voice therapy shortly after that to
learn how to talk all over again, with my new chords!
I never before had felt such a peace. On the night before the surgery, my
9-year-old (Christopher) asked if I was scared, and I could truly answer
him, "Christopher, with you and all these people praying worldwide, knowing
that I'm in the hands of the same God who created the universe and knowing
that He has promised to work everything in my life out for the good, how
could I be scared???"
So . . . it occurred to me, . . . why do we worry and fret about what's
going to happen tomorrow? At the end of it all, can we not somehow bring
ourselves to accept the fact that the God of all peace, the one who shaped
Mars, Jupiter and the moon, is our own personal God too? Is any problem
too big for Him to handle? And if He permits something, is it not for our
best interest? (Romans 8:28, Hebrews 12)
So again, thanks for the prayers . . and partnership -- and remember the God
who shaped the universe is the one in charge of you!
Your silent friend,
Doug
