CD-ROM "BEST PRICE OF THE YEAR" AWARD

This one wins the "Best Price Of The Year" award for 1997 (so far). Tom Wood is distributing his new "Mission Resource Kit" for $2! Get a copy from AD2000 and Beyond Movement, 2112 So Circle Drive, suite 2112, Colorado Springs, CO 80906 (719)576-2000. These are brand new (I haven't even gotten mine yet), custom-prepared for GCOWE '97 in South Africa -- but available to everybody. With 530 Megs. of info, he's got the Adoption Guidance Program on there, along with the entire text of the Praying Through the Window III book and calendar, the new Praying Through the Window video (driver included), six other mission videos, the Joshua Project database, Power Point presentations (with viewer), people group prayer profiles, the Caleb Project website and contact lists for further research. In addition, he's added the new listing of the nearly 600 of the 1739 Joshua Project peoples still lacking mission effort -- prime candidates for church adoptions. This is a blockbuster list at a bucks-buster price! (But the real measure of this CD is going to be whether or not he put the Brigada web site in the mix! :-)Just kidding. Of course if he had, the royalties would have killed the price, ya know. :-))

BACKDRAFT ON "PRAYING THROUGH THE WINDOW" CAMPAIGN

(/)You'll recall we asked recently (June 6th Brigada Today) "WHY AREN'T I HEARING MUCH ABOUT OCTOBER?" Now interestingly enough, my obsession with the English phrase "aren't I" (why do we use a plural verb with a singular pronoun) attracted almost as much attention as the real meat of the question (what does that tell you about PTW3??? ! :-)), but I will say that it's drawn a lot of mail. In fact, remember that you can get a summary of comments by emailing hub@xc.org with only the line,
get brigada ptw3lets

One additional item that came in this week was a note from Mark Paterson at Global Mapping. They've put together a map of the Joshua Project 2000 people clusters and they're making it available in several configurations (8 1/2 x 11 inches, 11 x 17 inches, and 22 x 34 inches) at very reasonable prices (suggested retail prices are: US$1.00, US$2.50, and US$5.00, respectively, plus shipping). Discount prices for quantity orders are available. There are several sources for these, including WorldChristian News & Books, YWAM Publishing, and Caleb Project. We've attached to the file a special promotional piece from WorldChristian News & Books. They seem to be pricing the stuff very aggressively! You can also order quantities at wholesale prices direct from GMI. To get all the source info., just send email to hub@xc.org with only the line,
get brigada ptw3maps

And by the way, you can now get the "Praying Through The Window III" Calendar in the Portuguese language from teureino@nutecnet.com.br. (Thanks to "Thy Kingdom Come -- Intercession Network"!) We should be able to measure the interest level in each PTW campaign by the number of maps ordered. :-) Where's Barna when we need him. :-)

FOR THOSE GETTING STARTED LEARNING ANOTHER LANGUAGE

(/) And you thought language learning was hard! Sorry that the link given in last week's item (by this title) turned out to be somewhat of an evolutionist's nightmare -- a "missing link!" :-) So Kerstin has done her homework and would like to offer these two substitutes:
http://www.hardlink.com/~chambers/HLP/
http://jltc.army.mil/foreign.html
Those learning a foreign language are finally going to be happy campers, we hope. Thanks Kerstin!

ANOTHER SOURCE FOR PRAYER CARDS

This past week we came across Evangel Press, clbacctg@juno.com, 800-253-9315/(219)773-3164; 2000 Evangel Way, PO Box 189, Nappanee, IN 46550-0189; fax 219-773-5934. They have "Large Prayer Cards" for $445 for 2500 and "Small cards" for $415 for 2500. Worth a look.

DARE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

In a new book by that name, Lionel & Carol Green encourage Christians to be committed disciples and faithful witnesses for Jesus Christ in order that people around the world may hear the Gospel. It reportedly presents basic truths about God's Word in a clear, user-friendly manner. Though I haven't seen a copy, I hope to soon! Even has wide margins throughout and Action Steps at the end of each chapter. Topics include such issues as, How can I know God's will for my life?, How has culture been affected by secularism, pluralism, relativism, political correctness, and the New Age Movement?, Are missionaries still needed?, What difference can I make in the world? Get your copy from postmast@sim.ca SIM Canada, 10 Huntingdale Blvd., Scarborough, ON Canada M1W 2S5, Tel: 416-497-2424, Fax: 416-497-2444. Cost for Brigada participants is apparently Cdn. $7.50 each with free postage and handling. Thanks Lionel & Carol!

"ENOUGH IS ENOUGH" FOLLOW-UP

(/)Evidently, enough wasn't enough :-) -- because we're still hearing more about the "enough is enough" item, which you'll recall dealt with the question we all ask ourselves when serving in full-time Christian ministry, "When is enough enough? Have I given enough time to the work this week and am I giving enough time to my family, etc.?" Judi King jltmking@juno.com wrote with a few recommended books, including Thanks Judi! Many (I mean . . . M-A-N-Y wrote saying they resonated with the item... that they were indeed haunted by questions about how much is enough. All I can say is... this is one we'd better keep praying about. I don't think we've "arrived" yet in our confidence about "balance."

--------------------------------------

MORE TO COME ON "WHERE ARE ALL THOSE WORKERS GOING TO COME FROM?"

Apparently Barna is being called to the podium to research the question of what it will take to connect evangelicals into significant second-career assignments in appropriate areas of missions--whether on the field or in supporting roles in the infrastructure. Word on the street is that Navigators are going help with setting up an "Urbana-like" conference for this demographic group. Should prove very interesting. We're trying to find out more about this one. Thanks to Don for the tip!

--------------------------------------

PLAY IT AGAIN, SAM (MAKE SOME MUSIC THAT FITS YOUR HOST CULTURE)

(/) Here's a gal willing to help you find out! Dianne Palmer-Quay R_DQuay@compuserve.com is doing a major research piece on ethnomusicology. She's trying to put together a ga-zillion articles on how to make music that "fits" your host culture. If you've tried that, send her your ideas. She's doing more than a Brigada compilation. She's writing a whole book. (Could this be another chance for stardom? :-) So she's asking, " Do you use music based on traditional tunes or ethnic instruments in your worship services? Do you "adjust" western hymns or praise choruses to make them more appealing to non-western believers? Have you ever tried to, or asked someone else to, compose a new worship song in an indigenous style? Would you like to make some changes in how worship is experienced by the people you serve but are not sure how to proceed?" Well if your answers are "yes" to any of those, then has she got a research piece for you! :-) Write her with your ideas, samples, tunes, etc. :-) She'll give us an abstract. I bet. You will, won't you Dianne Palmer-Quay? :-)

GLOBAL GLIMPSE FROM ALBANIA

Recent days have shown no relief from the violence and disorder which have hung over Albania. However, several Youth With A Mission (YWAM) staff braved the unrest for a visit. They found that in the absence of foreign missionaries, members of the evangelical community (all of whom are no more than 7 years old in the faith) are assuming leadership roles. Because of the foreigner's absence Albanian Christians are growing in faith, trust, courage and leadership for the Kingdom.

(We're greatly grateful that Global Glimpse is gotten globally by John Hanna, Caleb Project, Littleton, CO.)

TO RUSH YOUR RUSSIAN COPY

... of Operation World, just send 40,000 rubles (What! No Rubles left? Don't worry. Lots of Russians feel the same way. Except maybe you can come up with the 8 bucks equivalent. :-) to Pasha Damyan, Shpalernaya 60, block 1, St Petersburg, Russia. Tel: 812-271-9102, Fax: 812-127-8646. If you have questions, maybe Jane can help you at janeb@ge.om.org.

A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME...

Well, I've got to eat crow again. Remember my comments about Compuserve... I mean CIS??? (Last week's item, " THE TRUTH ABOUT '=3D' CODES IN COMPUSERVE.") Well now David DavidHousholder@XC.Org has pointed out (accurately, I might grudgingly admit) that they've changed their name from Compuserve Information Service ("CIS") to "CSi" (CompuServe Interactive). Guess they gave up on competing with a commonwealth after all! :-) Thanks David. I reckon. :-)

--------------------------------------

HELP FOR CSi ALPHA ADDRESSES

If you've changed your CSi address (that's Compuserve -- read the previous item! :-)) to an alpha signature (like DougLucas@compuserve.com) prior to unsubscribing your old address from a Brigada conference, now there's hope for you after all!!! :-) Christel found out from CompuServe Tech services that you can
  1. Start CompuServe as usual.
  2. GO to MAILSET then
  3. Double-click on: COMPUSERVE MAIL SETTINGS, then
  4. Unclick the check mark in front of: DISPLAY YOUR PERSONAL ID TO RECIPIENTS, then
  5. Click on the OK button so the change takes effect.
At that point you can send the unsubscribe command to , then go back to CSi and reverse the process to get your personalized ID back again! Yahooooo! Do you realize what this means? CSi users (who have been receiving bounce-backs any time they tried to use a command with the hub) are going to be very happy campers! (CSi users would continue to receive Brigada mail, even with their new addresses, but anytime they try to "get" a file from the hub, they're treated as a nobody because the hub reads their new alpha address as a stranger. And if they "subscribe" again with their new alpha address, they get double copies of each mailing!)

Meanwhile, moderators (who have been getting zillions of requests for help from unhappy subscribers) will be thrilled that you can take care of your own electronic needs without having to ask for their assistance in this easy-to-fix matter.

Don't forget to subscribe again after you've restored your new alpha setting. :-) I know this seems like a hassle, but believe me, . . . when you're tracking zillions of bounces, if even a few faithful friends take the time to clean up after themselves, it can make a big difference to an already overworked (and obviously underpaid volunteer moderator!). I'm preparing a "form letter" that I'll use to explain this approach to any CSi users who ask me for help... and I have urged all moderators to do the same. Thanks for your cooperation! This CSi name change business has got to be the largest massive time-waster in the history of online email conferencing! :-)

PGP 5.0 UPGRADES ALL QUEUED UP ON MONDAY

Starting Monday, it appears that PGP will take a great leap forward! Rod has tipped us off that PGP has created a major upgrade to their already popular email privacy products. You can read the details at http://www.ifi.uio.no/pgp/pgp50.shtml or just go to http://www.pgp.com and check it out! Early beta-testers say it's much friendlier and besides that, the free version is great! What's more, word on the street (again, thanks Rod!) is that the PGP 5.0 source code books, published in the US on June 14, have been legally exported to Europe! Work is now going on to scan in all the 6000+ pages and make the program available to PGP users worldwide. Expected release is early July. That could mean that immediately we won't have to worry about a USA version and an international version any more!!! Finally -- a break that could simplify personal email!!! Thanks Rod!

COMMENTS FRESH FROM ASIA: "I FEEL PUNY!"

My colleague just got back from a sensitive area of Asia (we'll not mention the specific country or his name right now since it's a very 'restricted access' kinda' place) and while there, he sent a message back to me that brought home just how small we are in this big ole' world. He wrote, "This place is so desperately in need of the truth, the light, the salt, the testimony, the witness, you name it!! ... I feel so puny over here. The challenge is so HUGE! Less than 1% know the redemption story. I think, man, we need 1000 PACE projects here alone! [A "PACE Project" is the name we're using for adopting a people for the purposes of church planting.] ... I stayed all night with a man who though at a young age of 52, knows 10 languages, has been very instrumental in the translation of a Bible in his mother tongue for his people, and has together with his group of friends started 40 + churches in [this sensitive country].... I couldn't help but feel real puny going before the Lord that night! What a passion! A shining light. I met a lady today....who committed to mission service in 1951, wow! The marathon runners are so few today...I am so thankful that I have been able to meet several before they pass on. Their works have been done in relative silence with little fan fare, and this lady will probably be here till the Lord comes back or till he takes her home. A medical clinic, a dormitory ministry so tribals can go to school, sort of a hostel type thing, leadership training center, outreach to rescue girls before they get into prostitution, ministry to the aids victims! Incredible. They say 200,000 will be orphaned in the next 5 years due to both parents dying of aids! If she were younger (76) she would start an orphanage. Who will God raise up??"

His report tugged at my heart-strings for more reasons than one. We "mobilizer types" tend to see the world at the "macro" level. "Show me a map of the globe and let me see the little polygon bubbles for all the people groups in ___ [fill in the blank with your favorite region or country]." That's what we say. We worry about the thousands -- or millions . . . and sometimes lose touch with the fact that real change takes place one life at a time, one family at a time.

I think that's why my buddy's comments hit me so hard. I realized what a big job we had in front of us. Then I read his next paragraph, "I had a taste of heaven on Sun. morn. Over 15 tribal peoples were gathered together under the same roof to worship the King of Kings! Wow! Standing room only!" And I guess it brought me back to reality that we really do have a great God. He has a great army. We have to view life one person or one family at a time, but thank God, we have a huge force of believers to mobilize.

But for this Biblical principle to work, we must all stay involved for the long haul. We can't have people fading in, fading out, getting tired of this fad, tired of that fad. To make a long-term change, we will need more than a church planting team on-site in each of the people groups of the Joshua Project 2000 list. We'll need thousands of Christians excited about their beliefs, their personal lives, and their walk with the Savior. I hope you're able to stick around for a few years. :-)
