NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ON CD - REVISITED
Just when you thought we were
done talking about The Complete National Geographic, "we're
baaaaaaaaa-aaaack!"
This past week, growing deeper and deeper into this
Bosnia research project, I decided to bite the bullet when I saw the entire
30-CD set on sale locally here at "Computer City" for $159. (Brigada
price-watchers have seen it for as low as $149!) Got it home and unwrapped it,
queued up the search engine for Bosnia, and -- seconds later I was perusing
the June 1996 article and pictures on screen. It's worth every penny of the price
if you ever have to look up pictures. And sure enough, it was good enough for
my 11-year-old to skip desert for so he'd be first at the keyboard! As one
reader pointed out, these are scanned pages, so you can't "copy" and "paste"
the text, and the pictures aren't "objects", but it's still great if you
have a big screen. Unfortunately, according to Rod, " Woe to Mac Quadra AV users, for
you're likely to pull your hair out over crashes, at least if you're still
using system 7.5. I'm still trying to get to the bottom of this
incompatibility." We'll hear back on that one, we hope. Several have asked how
to call stores like Costco and Computer City from outside the USA. A better bet
is to get on the web and do a search for "The Complete National Geographic". I
tested this approach and in moments had on-line stores that would sell me the
title on-line in the right price range. Make sure you never send your credit
card information over email -- use only a web page with "secure sockets" layer
or PGP email encryption.

WONDERING ABOUT COMIBAM? WONDER NO MORE
As you may know Hurricane
Pauline struck Acapulco, Mexico, causing significant damage to the area. This is the
site of COMIBAM '97 where more than 4,000 delegates from across Latin America
will be meeting October 27-31 to assess the development of Latin America's
missionary force since the historic declaration at COMIBAM '87 in Sao Paulo,
"From Mission Field to Mission Force." This is seen as a vital congress to
fully assess the emerging missionary force from Latin America to the rest of
the world.
The latest word from Rudy Giron, outgoing Executive Director of COMIBAM, is:
- The congress is going ahead as planned.
- Please pray for the many families affected in the area. All delegates are
being asked to bring to the congress something that can be donated to the
people living in the area who have been displaced by Hurricane Pauline.
- Please pray for the Mexican volunteers working to prepare for the
congress.
The hurricane mainly affected the part of the mountain outside the tourist
resorts. The structure needed to carry the congress is working properly with
electricity, water, etc.
All the members the COMIBAM team already in Acapulco are OK and preparations
are moving ahead as smoothly as possible in the prevailing circumstances. So
the word at this time is that COMIBAM '97 is DEFINITELY ON!!!!

RUSSIAN BIBLE STILL RUSHIN'
For those who wondered what happened to the
Russian Bible program, you can still get the Base package of "Slavic Bible" 1.5
for Windows from ftp-server
ftp.aist.net in directory
pub/shareware/sbible/.
The Base package is shareware and has the Russian Synodal translation of the
Bible with deuterocanonical books, cross reference module, maps, photos of
Holy Land and topical handbook. In addition, now the program has a two-language
(Russian & English) interface, which the user can change "on fly" without
restarting or dropping to DOS. Pretty slick! It also contains modules of Bible
texts in Russian, Church-Slavonic, Ukrainian, Biblical Hebrew (OT), Greek (LXX
& NT 4 editions), Latin, English (more 10 classic and modern versions),
French, German and Italian. If you interest in this modules, please, contact with
Sergej A.Fedosov,
sergej@mova.donetsk.ua. Now... where will we find
something similar in Serbo-Croatian!

GLOBAL GLIMPSE WITH GLOBAL HOPE
Two previously Muslim Palestinians report
how God is moving in the midst of the troubles on the West Bank: "God has let a
new spiritual hunger loose, and reveals himself to those who seek him," says
one of the pastors. "On average, one Muslim is coming to believe in Jesus each
week. Eighty percent of the people in the Palestinian-controlled areas want
peace, and only twenty percent have extreme views," he says. A Muslim Sheikh
has also become a follower of Jesus, explaining that he wants to understand the
Word of God better and explain it to his "questioning brothers".

SPECIAL TREAT FOR THOSE OUTSIDE THE USA DURING OCTOBER
You don't have to
face the perplexing question of how to deal with this weird American tradition
of celebrating Halloween. What a strange nation we are, to lift up ghoulish
spirits and goblins and laugh and poke fun at images of Satan's real schemes.
Our family sat down around the table last night after a visit to the local zoo
last evening. Yikes.
There were so many goblins, I felt queasy inside. We
decided as a family that the whole holiday is nuts and we're all moving to
Bosnia by mid-month. Well, okay... maybe I'm exaggerating just a bit. But we
did decide to try to forego all the scary stuff that reminds us of the devil.

WHAT KIND OF WITNESS TO THE WORLD CUP?
Here's an invitation to compile
all efforts to pour in witness at the World Cup in France, next June and July
'98. If you or your ministry has plans to witness to players or spectators who
will be arriving from all points throughout the globe, send a brief
description and contact information to
DLucas@TeamExpansion.org. Make sure you include details if
you're looking for additional volunteers and recruits! I'd sure like to have a
great ministry excuse to be in Paris in July!
